Does anyone know where to find fresh coconut around Seoul?

Lately I've been interested in coconut and coconut oil as a health food. I've been able to buy fresh coconut at a LotteMart in Goyang where I live, but I'd like to find other places that sell them so that I can make some comparisons regarding quality, flavor, etc.

Anyone know of places around Seoul where fresh coconut can be purchased?

Was it a brown small one or an actual fresh green young coconut?

LotteMart had the brown coconuts last July for a Summer time special, but never seen em' again. I'd like to find a nice sized bag of shredded coconut without a silicon packet in it like you find in a new pair of shoes.

well, fresh coconuts are a bit hard to find, considering the fact that Korea isn't a in a tropical zone. Coconuts pretty much have to be prepped for shipping from whatever country they come from.

That said, I've seen coconuts that have ad their outer green shell stripped at homeplus occasionally for a price.

So, what does this small response mean? No other coco-nuts around Seoul?

That's OK. I can live with that.

However, I am inclined to believe that eating a coconut a day (and drinking its juice)and using it for all cooking situations is very pro-health. (And tastes good too.)

If you want an actual coconut, they're plentiful and cheap in Ansan, if you feel like making the trek.

Every Kim's Club I've been to stocks brown coconuts. KC is normally part of the 2001 New Core department store in the lowest level.

Coconuts for health? The water/juice is great but the flesh contains a lot of fats. It still makes a great smoothie with other fruit.

Actually, some fats are healthier than others and there is one saturated fat that is very healthy -- coconut oil. It is made up primarily of medium-chain triglycerides rather than the long-chain triglycerides that other saturated fats are primarily made from and 50% of of coconut oil is made of a super-nutrient called lauric acid. The only other abundant source of lauric acid is human mother's milk.

Also, coconut oil rather than circulating in the blood stream and being stored as extra fat is immediately metabolized similarly to carbohydrates but without causing blood sugar spikes making it an excellent replacement for carbohydrates by athletes.

It's a rather unique sort of oil and well-worth paying attention to and reading about for the health-conscious particularly if one has been propagandized by the polyunsaturated oil lobby of the USA (corn, soy, sunflower, safflower, etc.) to believe that the highly beneficial tropical coconut oil (which the polyunsaturated oil producers cannot grow themselves) isn't a beneficial food. Influential industry shills for the polyunsaturated oil lobby have rotated back and forth between high-paying jobs with that lobby and powerful positions with the FDA whereas the oils from poorer coconut-producing nations like the Philippines and Malaysia had no such champions within such frequently industry-shilling government organizations nor the financial resources to compete with the US growers propaganda efforts against coconut oil.

I'm not going to provide a list of links on this topic since it is so easy to google on terms like "coconut health" and come up with a lot of opinion on this controversial topic, but certainly there are some health researchers that think the lauric acid of coconuts will become as famous as Omega-3 as a focus for the health-conscious as the benefits become more widely-known.

PS. Of course, I could be wrong about all this, but it is a subject that I am seriously trying to study rather than relying only on my own accumulated prejudices of many decades. The recommendation that I am currently following is to use extra virgin coconut oil for all cooking and olive oil for non-cooking uses such as salad dressings. Stove-top popcorn made with coconut oil tastes incredible, by the way. After it's popped I pour a little extra virgin olive oil, salt, and curry powder on it. Zowee mama!!!

A company that I heard about here on this forum, iherb.com, They're in N. Calif. and have very decent prices and shipping rates. I didn't see anything worthwhile on gMarket though I certainly could have overlooked it.

I got a 54 oz jar of Nutiva brand and it was ~ $24 plus ~ $10 shipping. Got here in 5 days.

That was very useful info since there is a Kim's Club not too far from me at 마 두 역. And their quality (based on the 1st half dozen that I've bought there, anyway) is much better than those at LatteMart. The ones at LatteMart had a high percentage that were spoiled once you opened them.

Those terrific chewy coconut cookies that I need to find a recipe for.

You're probably right about those 3 items being healthy too if you just drop all the non-coconut ingredients from the recipes. ;->)

PS. I think those cookies that you're referring to are called macaroons.
