I kind of drunkenly made a promise to my boyfriend one night that we would sacrifice a sheep for Kurban Bayram, the Muslim holiday where people sacrifice a sheep. Now he's taking me at my word and we're supposed to buy a sheep tomorrow and sacrifice it on Tuesday. We're going to split the cost but I have to admit I have some qualms about it. On the other hand, is it worse than what happens in slaughterhouses? But if I go through with the ritual I'll feel kind of guilty about satisfying my morbid curiosity about the whole thing. Should I just give in and take part in a foreign ritual?

As long as you eat the thing. If you don't you just wasted a life for nothing. BTW were would you sacrifice the thing? You know sacrificed animals bleed a lot, where would you dispose of the blood?

From what I've heard there's a designated area where a butcher actually does it and part of the meat goes to the poor.

Why? How is this any worse than just buying meat in a supermarket? If you're otherwise a vegetarian, I suppose I can see why this would bother you. If you're strongly religious, I suppose I can see why participating in the ritual of another religion would bother you. Otherwise, what's the problem? You're making the person you love (or at least strongly like; I don't know how far along your relationship is) happy and donating something of value to the poor at the same time.

Yeah you're absolutely right. I'm not a vegetarian and I'm not religious. I'm just thinking maybe i'm participating in the ritual out of some voyeuristic watching an animal die thing. But if it turns out to be more than that or continues in another frame then maybe it's not so bad.

Do you have a point or are you just insinuating a prejudice?

Pondering about my own experience with a muslim friend, really. Nothing to discuss about it.

Well, in New Zealand we would get two sheep of similar size and disposition and then add fighting gear to them. One sheep we added a unicorn horn, the other we glued nails to its hooves. My friend managed to create a combat helmet for our sheep (barely allowed according to the rules) which saved it from numerous aggressive attacks. One hour before the fight we liquored them up on bathtub gin and speights old dark beer and the fight was on!
The loser became dinner.

How about it OP? 2 sheep fight to the death.

I have watched a documentary based in Saudia Arabia whereby sheep from Australia were killed Halal style.

I would just say that if you are not squirmish then go for it, but it isn't something I would want to watch too often.

The sheep didn't die as quickly as the ones I watched dispatched in the freezing works as a kid. It took a while to die and suffered I thought quite badly. Kind of put me off the whole halal issue, as there was no nicities to it.

Just be warned, its not pretty watching it happen.

(edit) I hope that your boyfriend is a muslim and that you arent doing it just for kicks.

This man is insane. I feel I should monitor (and participate in) his activities lest any uninitiated try to gain access to fun outside of their comfort sphere.^^

If I understand this correctly, the OP is going to buy a live sheep so that she can kill it in a ritualistic slaughter?

This is sadistic and wasteful. I would normally say a lot worse but because of the TOS I won't say anything more.

Recessiontime:
The OP is going to buy a sheep which will then be killed in a ritualistic manner by a professional butcher. Some of the meat will feed the less fortunate.

NK: I think it's great you are looking to observe your SO's cultures and customs. In general, many westerners can be very detached about where food (meat) comes from. Even if you can't relate to the religious reasoning behind it, I think it can help you appreciate the "circle of life" and your relationship with nature. Be well.
