Decent vacation time, plus enough money to enjoy that vacation time, plus close enough to Asia to go to awesome vacation destinations. That's one of the biggest reasons for me....

If there were better employment options back home, most of us wouldn't be here.

The popularity of Korea is a sad statement on the working situation back home.

.

Teaching public schools in Korea is a nice experience. I loved the children. However the Korean school system and co-teachers can be really fickle or sometimes downright evil after you leave. It can really be a problem, something you need to think about.

You might try Thailand, especially subject teaching such as math and science. The wages in Thailand are starting to become competetive with the Baht getting stronger, a little over $US 1300 per month in Bangkok and wages will definitely go up as the Baht continues to climb, which it will. The government can't control it. Bangkok is cheap to live in; Apts for $US 150 and the food is cheap. Bangkok is nice if you can put up with the crappy sidewalks, motorcycles and stalls blocking the sidewalks, Tuk Tuk hawkers, street touts and the scams. I guarantee you will get scammed at least once during your tenure, it's annoying.

I'm here because I love Korea. I make pretty decent money, and I'd rather be here living this lifestyle than back home. Simple!

this might sound crazy but i am leaving a long term job and a steady lifestyle behind because i want to continue to grow and experience new things. I read a lot that people go to Japan or Korea for the money all the time, i make a little under 48k a year currently but i am bored and complacent so i am coming to Korea to grow and learn and experience a different view on life to try to help my mind stay open (a task that becomes harder and harder as you get older and those damn kids play their music to loud). Money comes and goes, bills come and go, problems come and go. Without stress and struggle growth is very limited in my opinion.

If you don't care about money and all you want is to "grow", why don't you just join monks in Tibet?

Ehh, more like I'm in my 20s and love traveling, so why not live here for a few years and then move on to somewhere else? Definitely wasn't a misfit at home, I was just bored even when I was busy.

Well, now I work at a school with fights, overcrowding, and disrespectful students. The district is looking for any reason to fire teachers to cut the budget deficit. I pay $700 for rent, and fight traffic everyday to and from work. Car note, car insurance, Teacher union fees, and other countless bills.

Its funny because I make $49,000 a year teaching, but I truly hate going to work now. There is always drama going on and I might have to jack one of these gangbangers against the wall, if they ever try me. (not trying to sound like a tough guy cause im not)

Im just ready for a change. (and free rent) LOL
