I listen to the car radio and sometimes I turn the HDTV to the radio channels (800s) and I swear whenever I get world music time or world music channel or any radio program decides to go international, they all head to one ethno-musicological destination - Brazil!
Now don't get me wrong - I love Carnival and Jobim as much as the next rapaz. I'm all for it. But why for the love of favellas is it always only Brazilian? Like, it's never any other country. I have to go to classical for that.
So I got to wondering - Brazil is one of the BRIC countries, and IMB is really big on promoting trade with the middle or rising power countries which I've always thought was a great idea - e.g. promoting trade with Turkey or Sweden etc. Is Korea on a big pro-Brazilian economic kick? Is that why it's always Portuguese song I hear on any worldmusic-themed program and/or channel in Korea? Why is it never Ghana or Germany? Are they going through the alphabet and they're just on 'B' at the moment? If so, does that mean an era of Burmese music is nigh upon us? |
