There must people seriously reconsidering going to South Korea right now. How great is the danger? What would do if you felt an attack was imminent?
In a previous thread some people said they would head for a US base, why would you do that? In my opinion that's probably a target. That's like heading to a powerplant in Iraq once the invasion starts.
I would really like to be in South Korea by the end of the month or the beginning of April. But I'm starting to have serious concerns.
SO again I ask those that are there, what's the plan? |

Um, Someone started a thread on the "Question and Answer Board" on what you are asking. The answer that came out of it was that we would have no chance of getting out once things started untill more forces arrived here and started to push the North Koreans back. The infomation came from the military.

I was talking with some MI (Military Inteligence) guys this past weekend and they suggested that you find a consul for your country outside and south of Seoul to head to in case the s hit the fan. The US military has plans to hold off an attack from the North for 6 to 12 hours before retreating to Pusan. (that is the port where re-inforcements will arrive) They dont think they can handle anything more than that. The US only has around 10,000 combat troops in Korea, the rest is MI and support.
This is only what I have heard though...

The problem is not necessarily a North Korean nuclear threat, according to Koreans. It's the North Korean military.
The Korean military has special units, or commandos, that are capable of sacking and making amphibious landings just about anywhere in Korea. This would be catastrophic seeing North Korea has over 200,000 of these soldiers
One has to wonder if we're still taking a chance being here, especially in light of last nights spy plane incident. North Korea almost shot one US spy plane down in an international fly zone.
The worst scenario, however, are the biological and chemical weapons. Hmm, maybe this is why North Korea is acting up so much. |

Does anyone remember the "mighty" Iraqi Republican Guard during the Gulf War? Everyone was saying "Republican Guard! Republican Guard! Everyone beware!" But when it came down to it the "elite Iraqi forces" ran off into the desert yelling "Run away! Run away!" like some Monty Python movie.
If it came down to a conventional war between American/South Korea and North Korea it will be a one sided butt kicking. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that the North's artillery is more than capable of doing a fair bit of damage to the South, but at the end of the day the North will wind up in the hurt locker.
That is my 20 won. |

Actually, it's 120,000 which is up from the 80,000 ten years ago.
Though it's a paper tiger. They don't have the means to deliver them behind enemy lines en masse. Plus as part of the USFK and ROK military development, they call for sinking anything that comes down the coastline that isn't identified as their's or a civilian unit. As well stepping up base security by using off-duty personal like cooks, mechanics, and other people who wouldn't be doing anything at the time anyway, and using them as guards at military bases.
Plus during the last great Sokcho invasion of 1996, half the commandos who would give their lives for the great leader were killed by their own officers. It is believed that they had wanted to surrender.

North Korea is acting up because they are confident the U.S. will do nothing. They've boarded spy ships, the U.S. did not shoot back. They've shot down a spy plane, the U.s. did not shoot back. They've killed U.S. soliders in the DMZ, the U.S. did not shoot back.
If they won't shoot back when being shot at, why would they shoot back when they are only promising to shoot some more?
Use the bluff, call for free money.
I don't see them using chemical or biological weapons because that would result in a nuclear response. |

something must be freezing over I actually agree with CO's take. Think the North is acting like a spoiled kid demanding attention now that everybody seems focused on Iraq.
Unless its a massive strike I don't think the US will retaliate to these "little" provcations by the North. Think Israel in 1991, if they would of struck back imagine what carnage would of been like. Same scenario except nobody is telling the US not to retaliate |

it would take 21 days for the u.s. to evacuate its citizens from here. don't know about canuks, ossies or kiwis...
north korea does have the capability to deliver commandos en masse, i just read that in the new york times yesterday (or was it usa today, i can't remember?) delivery would be through minisubs, other small amphibious ships, regular size subs, and aircraft. also tunneling through the dmz...in fact, these commandos are seen as the biggest threat (not chem/bio/nuke weapons or the regular army) because they would be able to take out key politicians and military personnel, and disrupt operations in general in the south. they would also kidnap civilians and soldiers to hold hostage.
the north koreans may be bluffing, as they have in the past...how long will we take that chance? when do we pull up stakes and high-tail it outta here? i for one do not look forward to an excrutiating death by anthrax...or one of the many other nasty weapons the north has...not to mention the hundreds of thousands of conventional artillery pieces which will level seoul within hours...
this same report (captain obvious, find out which paper i read that article in, please... you're good at this kind of stuff, and obviously enjoy stats and such) stated that 38% of seoul's population would be liquidated. |

Tell that to the Kuwaits and Israelis who had their butt whooped!
It might have seemed like a completely one-sided victory for us living in North America and watching the Gulf War Video Game on CNN, but Iraq got heaps of blows in against Kuwait, and especially against Israel.
We'll be living in the "Israel" of any DPRK-US war. But of course, unless Kim Jong-il is insane, that'll never happen. |

the fact is you are taking a chance simply by being here..there are
far safer places to be. That being sad, either prepare to leave quickly
(no quick stop at Seoul Pub), or walk around oblivious to it all, like
most Koreans. I prefer to have bags packed... |

to be practical, have some cash on hand at all times, preferably US dollars, or another stable currency. have some idea what is important enough to take and what isn't.
If there ever is an invasion, the safest thing to do might just be head south. Think of all the people who will be trying to flee the country by boat or plane, and think of the dangers involved in hopping a boat.
almost certainly an invasion will be pushed back, with help from Japan, and a slew of other countries that will come to the aid of South Korea, not even to mention the US presence here already. so i doubt you have to leave the country right away. might be a good idea to just chill in jeju island for awhile.
again, NK will not attack, because that would be shooting themselves in the foot with a nuclear bomb. |

I've got my emergency backpack handy, as recommended by the US Embassy web page.
If/when I am waiting in line at the evacuation site, I will laugh as I see the hundreds of Maple Leafs littering the ground. And as I stand in line, I will remember all of the Kiwis, Aussies, and Canucks who said, "NO! I'm not AMERICAN!" as if they were accused of having the plague. At that moment, I'm sure some will wish (or try) to change their tune.
Ok, a sick fantasy, but funny. |

If North Koreans attack I will stay here and carry on business as usual. Worrying is a waste of time. You can't run from nukes and if you are worried about North Korean troops banging on your door one morning with an AK47, my best advice is to buy yourself a case of soju and a really big knife, never mind the stores of food and water. Besides, storing up food like that will just attract more North Korean troops to hit your apartment first. |
