I've seen the threads on this school (located in Jongro). However, the discussions were a few years ago. Anybody have some more recent info on the school?

Cool place. And, if they still have them, there are teacher apartments right downtown in JongRo across the alley from the school. Very convenient as that is a rocking place. Also, if you have to do splits, you can just walk up and relax. Going out after work isn't a big deal either, then, as you don't have to waste a couple of hours getting somewhere and back. If the money is ok, and they will give you one of those units, I'd say go for it.

I used to work there a few years ago. It's not that bad as far as mid-sized hagwons go. I would advise against taking their housing, however, as the teachers I used to work with who lived across the street had serious privacy issues. THe school kept extra keys and staff would stroll right in at anytime if they needed to fix something in the room. One female teacher had a shower interrupted.

And even worse is the house the owner owns. The top floor was two units - one for a teacher and the other for a long-term staff member who lived there with his family. The problem is that they would split the bills in half... I remember one teacher refrained from taking a hot shower for a month just to demonstrate that he was being charged for utilities he wasn't using.

Easily solved. Don't take the owner's house unit. For the ones across from the school, simply change the locks as soon as you move in. Takes 5 minutes. Don't ask anyone, just do it. After it's done, don't tell anyone, either. Simple as that.

I was just offered a contract with them. If they can guarantee some sort of hour range (contract currently says "Instructor shall normally be required to work average of 30 hours a week, at whatever times the Academic Director shall direct. No regular schedule of working hours can be guaranteed to Instructor "), along with a few typical cosmetic things, I'm definitely going to sign. I've heard nothing but good things about them, and they're located right where I want to be.

Split shifts are a major downer, but everyone has to pay their dues. Not bad if you have housing right across the street! Could be worse places to work, and at least they pay on time and the location is convenient. I'd say go for it.

I almost accepted their offer. The contract was solid. I also got an email from a current teacher; he also said good things. However, I got another offer at a uni that was even better. I took the uni gig. Smile

A further update about Chungmoon. It's a good school with good management. A few days ago I mentioned it to some Korean students I'm doing a language exchange with in New Zealand and they said it also has a good rep among Korean students.

I was about to begin working there again in July as I've worked there in the past and they were willing to let me have a six month contract. Because of the time involved in arranging a UK CRC from NZ when I have very little UK proof of residence paperwork remaining to back me up, I've advised the manager at Chungmoon to find someone else.

As the other posters have mentioned, the split shifts are a drag, but the management is cool, the classes are small (5 students max) and with housing across the road or in nearby Insadong, it's very convenient.

I have to update or correct some of what Brian wrote above. I lived across the street for 2 years and had no privacy problems that I can remember. My biggest complaint was the street noise, but the manager told me they have double glazed the windows so it's notso bad now.

Teachers are no longer housed in the house in Hyoja-Dong. I lived there too for about 6 months and have to admit the place was a bit crap (Was it perhaps Justin who didn't have the shower?). Having walked past the house a couple of years ago, it looks like it's been sold and has been remodelled into a cafe or shop.

Chungmoon is looking for a new teacher for July or August (mods, please don't remove this). I thought I'd bump and update this post as the manager I've been communicating with has been very helpful and I really do think it's a decent place to be based.

Kiwiduncan, I was referring to George, who I don't think you ever met.

It has been a while so perhaps the housing situation has improved... getting rid of the housing in Hyoja-dong is a good start.

But yeah, it's not a bad place to get one's foot in the door. You can certainly do a lot worse.
