Thinking about Krabi for vacation. Maybe Krabi town for a couple of nights, then go to Railay Beach, which I've heard is beautiful. I might splurge for a few nights on a resort on the west side where I've read the nice beach is (Railay Village Resort or something like that), but to anyone who's been there, what are accommodations like on the East side, where I've understand most of the restaurants and mid to low-range hotels are?
Basically where were your good experiences in Krabi? Feel free to throw in your impressions and experiences of Phi-phi as well.
Big thanks in advance! |

Never been, but been to Phi Phi.
I heard that Krabi is like Phuket-lite. Kind of like Phuket 20 years ago. Not overly touristy, but getting that way slowly. I loved Phuket despite the tourist cheese. I say do it. You're guarateed a good time.
Phi Phi was the kind of place I'd only want to stay a night, but maybe longer if I were single and had no kids. It was certainly a party atmosphere. If that's what you're into, then it's the place for you. |

personally I thought Phi Phi was very overrated (not to mention crowded and overprced). Krabi is ok, the beaches are nothing spectacular though. I would go to Ko Lanta...way nicer. |

I'd also give the nod to Koh Lanta. I've never been there but getting away from the tourist traps and party areas would be really good. A time of total relaxation can be incredibly beneficial to one's well being. |

The Phi Phi islands are host to the worst Eurotrash travellers this side of Asia. Unbelieveably loud, rude, inconsiderate, and professionals alcoholics, the lot of them.
Prices in January and February are outrageous for rooms there that just aren't worth the money, and places get crowded up real fast. My wife and I are thinking Krabi for this vacation.
We were in Koh Samet last go-round, but we've been to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui, and we prefer places that aren't overly touristy.
Also, most of the locals will hate your guts, and you really don't feel too welcome--and after seeing the lot that make the rounds to those islands, I don't blame them. |

thanks for the heads up on Phi Phi. I was also thinking of heading there at the end of Jan. Is Krabi better? |

Krabi has a beach (Ao Nang) that is more a relaxation point than a beach to swim in. Nobody really swam there when I was there in May last year, but you can easily get to Railay from Ao Nang.
I did hear from one guy who had been to Krabi several times, however, that in high and peak season, Krabi can be just as pricey and crowded as other places. I was there just as low season started and quite a few places had shut down or offered 20 percent discounts. |

I lived in Ao Nang, Krabi for a few months and I've travelled round there a lot.
It's very touristy all over that area unless you hire a bike/car to get off the beaten track, then you can find nice little beaches with hardly anyone on them.
I'll third the shout for Ko Lanta. Without a doubt my favourite place in that region. The locals are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet and if you stay somewhere in the south (as far away from saladan as possible), then you will find beautiful beaches with hardly anyone on them. I can personally reccommend the Lanta Marine View resort and a little further down the road, SunMoon Bungalows.
Enjoy! |

Widely available, cheap and as fast as anywhere in Thailand
btw, I forgot to mention you really should get a motorbike to explore Lanta. So cheap to hire and so much fun! Also, quite an experience trying to negotiate the dirt roads in the south on them |
