Are you applying for an E2 visa for the first time? You can ask, but to the best of my knowledge, it's just up to the consulate whether they give it to you or not. It depends on the consulate, lots of people are just issued single-entry. Boston automatically gives (or gave) multiple, and I've heard the same may be done for other Americans.
Really, you don't have much of a choice, it's not an issue of "requirements."
If you are issued a single-entry, there is a solution. Once you get to Korea, you just have to go to an immigration office and apply for a multiple-entry permit, cost is 50,000won last time I checked. This will allow you to leave and come back as you like, same as a multiple-entry visa. |

If you are American, ask for it when you get your visa (it is not always automatic).
If you are NOT American you can't get a multi-entry visa.
-you will have to apply for a re-entry permit when (or after) you get your ARC. Single use permits are 30k won. Multiple use permits are 50k won and good for your year.

Where can I do this besides the airport? I don't want to pay the bus fee to go to Incheon. |

At the same time, foreigners staying for more than three months will be able to freely travel overseas from Dec. 1 as long as they return within one year after their departure. Currently, foreigners, classified as long-term residents, are required to obtain reentry visas before taking an overseas trip regardless of its duration. |

The BEST time to get your re-entry permit is WHEN YOU APPLY FOR YOUR ARC. Tick the extra box at the top of the application form, add the extra 5 stamps (50k won) and your worry is done for the year.
IF you want a multi-entry you HAVE TO GET IT at your local immigration office or on-line via the immigration website. To do it on-line you need to be able to fax or scan your documents (application), pay the fee and receive/print the permit that you get sent.
Single use re-entry permits are 30k won and are available when you fly (at the airport), on-line or your local immigration office.
It takes about 30 minutes to get it done at the airport if you do it on the date of your flight. Just remember to do it before you check in at the airline counter and certainly before you go through security.

Visa reentry rules relaxed November 15, 2010
Starting in December, foreign nationals who have stayed in Korea for more than three months will not have to get permission from the immigration office when they want to go abroad and return within their authorized period of stay.
The Korea Immigration Service released a revised regulation yesterday covering registered foreigners who have lived in Korea for more than 91 days on a single-entry visa. Under the new rules, these foreigners will not need approval from the immigration office if they visit another country and re-enter Korea within their authorized period of stay. The new regulation will be effective Dec. 15.
Previously, a foreign national with a single-entry visa good for more than 91 days had to visit the immigration office and pay about 20,000 won ($17.73) for permission to take a trip abroad and re-enter Korea. Under the new regulation, about 900,000 foreigners will be exempted from the requirement, officials said.
The service also announced that foreign nationals who have F-5 permanent residency will be able to travel or live outside Korea for two years and maintain the F-5 status. Previously, they could only stay out of Korea for a single year.
