|
|
(My apologies if this question has been answered already. If it has, could someone direct me to that thread? I can't seem to locate it. Thanks in advance.)
My questions are about Apostille for the Degree and Criminal Background Check. Could someone help me with this? I'm having a hard time finding answers to this seeming complicated process. (My head is hurting).
Background:
I am a US citizen and in Korea now, without my Degree and without a Criminal Background check. I would prefer to get these documents in order without having to go back to the US.
Questions:
1. How do I get a photocopied Apostilled degree while I'm in Korea? (Do I have my parents make a copy of my university degree and mail it to the Apostille office? Where is this Apostille office in the US or Korea? Do I need to get in touch with my university? And then once they get the document back, they mail me the document?)
2. How do I get a Criminal Background check while I'm in Korea? (Do I shoot an e-mail to the FBI? And they send a CBC to my folks in the US? And then they send that CBC to the Apostille office and then they would mail that to me like they would with my degree?)
To throw one more wrench into this - if I have an F4 visa, do I still need to do this?
Again thanks in advance.
Is there a place that has all this info in once place? Like bullet points, step 1, step 2, etc. "If you have an E2 - do this." "If you have an F-4 do this." "If you're not in Korea yet, do this." "If you're in Korea, do this." I've been trying to play detective and gather clues from different sites, but am left still a bit confused. Sorry, and thanks!

1. Where does it say FREE? With the government so broke, I doubt they will do anything for FREE. All it say is they're

placing the FBI seal and the signature of a division official |
so you can send it for apostille.
2. When you forward your document to the FBI department of state it just takes longer to process. So, by the time you get your apostille after 12+ weeks for FBI background check, plus another 15-25 business days to get an apostille.
3. The original poster said he's in South Korea, if you read the forum, most people say FBI will NOT forward mail to South Korea. Ask around. Get the facts.
4. You do not have to do the apostille at the federal level. You can do it within your state, if you're in the states, but the original poster said he's not in the state, hence, the link. Agency can do the apostille much faster and sometimes cost effective because you don't have to pay for post/mail back and forth from South Korea. It's up to the person to find out the cost of shipping back and forth, not to mention the time. Agency and states do it within 24-48 hours. Federal level may take a month for apostille because they process for 50 states.
5. If deadline is an issue, do it at the state level or with an agency. Most people say that some state can't apostille a Federal document, that is not true 'cause they just don't know how to. Just keep in mind, if you don't meet your deadlines, someone may take your job because in essence everyone on this forum is your competitor.
6. Know how to get the FBI background check and apostille fast 'cause if you don't meet your EPIK or South Korean Teaching Agency deadlines, you're stuck with a FBI background check and apostille for nothing.

9. Does the FBI provide apostilles*?
(*An apostille is a certification that a document that has been legalized or authenticated by the issuing agency through a process in which various seals are placed on the document.)
The CJIS Division will authenticate U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73 fingerprint search results for international requests by placing the FBI seal and the signature of a division official on the results if requested at the time of submission. Documents prepared in this way may then be sent to the U.S. Department of State by the requester to obtain an apostille if necessary. This procedure became effective on January 25, 2010 and will apply only to documents finalized after that date. Requests to authenticate previously processed results will not be accepted. This procedure replaces the letter formerly provided by the CJIS Division that indicated the service was not provided. The apostille service is not provided to individuals requesting search results for Canadian immigration, as it is not required for this purpose. |

FBI BACKGROUND CHECK
------------------------------
1. Take your fingerprints on a FD-258 fingerprint card. You can do it at the embassy or local police station in South Korea. Make sure they do it correctly. Make sure nothing is smeared or they will reject your fingerprints and you will wait another 12 weeks. 7 weeks minimum.
2. If you're in South Korea like you said you are, you can forward the background check to a family member in the states and they can do the apostille for you or have an agency do it for you. They can do the apostille much faster and proper than forwarding to the federal level.
3. The important thing is making sure you do the fingerprints correctly. That's the longest time to wait if you mess up. Do two fingerprints if you have to. The rule of thumb is if you can see your prints, the FBI operator can see your prints as well.
Note: You may have a question about FD-258 card. It's a cardstock type of fingerprint card. Your prints are better printed on cardstock cause of the thickness. Often they are provided at the fingerprint place. If they don't have the FD-258 card, you can go on the FBI site and do it on the paper version.

Where does it ask for a charge? Please. You pay for the FBI check, then include a letter asking them to give it an apostille stamp/seal. And they will forward it to the department that does it for you, FREE.

The FBI website didn't specify how much longer it took to get a CRC sealed with an apostille.

You should too.

3. Can the FBI send the results to someone (or agency) other than myself?
Under Departmental Order 556-73, the results must go back to the requester, unless otherwise specified on the signed application. Note: The FBI will not send results to a government agency. |

Sure. It is possible. Sounds like you don't know for sure.

Another possibility. I've known others who have had their jobs wait until papers are in order.

Isn't that the same as #5?
And since you would have your FBI check in hand, wouldn't that mean that you can find another job (worse come to worse)?

So, nothing in that quote describes how long it will take, or if you need to pay extra for them to return it (but you should send a return pre-paid envelope to be safe). I gave an alternative because you made quite a few posts claiming that your website was the "be-all-end-all" for apostille needs. It isn't.
Anything else? |

Huh?
If you read the forum you will know. The topic is old news and it is listed on the fed's site. 15 days often change to 25 or more. It depends on the load of documents they get on a regular basis.
Mail Service
The Authentication of documents takes approximately 15 business days to process from the time of receipt**. |
