I am at the end of my first contract and plan to renew. I am curious about the process of visa renewal. I am here on a standard E-2 visa. However, my wife is here on an F-3(Spouse of Resident Visa). We are planning on traveling to my wife's home country after the completion of my first contract. I am concerned about the time required to renew and any other important details I should know such as documents required. I have tried the immigration website but couldn't find much. I have found from previous experience, when i first got our visas, that the info is often innaccurate or out of date. Anyone with experience renewing their visa please relate your experiences here. I am particularly interested in anyone with experience renewing an F-3 (Spouse of Resident Visa). |

bump. do you always have to leave the country and go back to the korean consulate in your home country in order to get a new visa? is the process different if instead of renewing with your current school you want to sign with a different school? |

If you have all the required documents in hand the extension process takes about 30 minutes after you get to the counter.
As the husband of your "f3" spouse YOU can apply for her extension at the same time.
MAKE SURE you get re-entry permits at the same time that you do the renewals (just tick the extra box on the top of the application form) so you don't have to worry about it when you plan to travel abroad. Your previous multi-entry or re-entry permit WILL EXPIRE when you extend your status of sojourn (extend your visa).
To renew you will need:
-Your passport
-her passport
-Your ARC
-her ARC
-application forms for both of you
-copy of your new contract with the end date clearly marked
(immigration does not care about anything else in the contract)
-sponsorship document signed and stamped by your school
-30k won each (you and her) for the extensions
-30k each for the re-entry permit (50k if you want a multi-use permit and free if you are from the UK). |

Yes, no and sometimes.
IF you are getting a new visa and do NOT have any black mark in your immigration file you can simply do a visa run to a neighboring country (like Japan).
IF you have a black mark then you have to return to your home country every time you apply for a new visa.
IF your old employer and new employer are agreeable (you can get a (LOR ) AND the contracts are concurrent you MAY bne able to TRANSFER your current sponsorship to your new employer and then do a simple EXTENSION to ensure that your contract end date and status of sojourn (visa length) are the same. This is NOT automatic. |

i am finishing my one year contract on an E2 visa. And, I wonder what paperwork will I have to complete when I go to Japan, if I have to. I haven't left the country so do I need a full backround check again? Transcripts, and all that other stuff too? |

If you are staying with your same employer then just the normal renewal documents and no need to go to Japan.
If you are changing jobs AND need a new visa then you need a full set of new documents again for the new visa application. AFTER you get the new visa confirmation number you make your visa run. You will need your number, passport, photo, fee and application form in Japan.

after three years I guess Im done working in Korea. That seems just ridiculous to me. Another backround check even though I haven't left the country. Another two sets of transcripts. All kinds of verifications, apostles and other crap. Embassy Interviews. Fingerprinting. Just because I want to change jobs. I guess the Korean government doesn't really want us here. |

A little off-topic, but has anybody heard about the new reg whereby you don't need a multiple-entry permit anymore? |

Rumor has it that it should happen mid December but it is still NOT confirmed.
If you don't have a permit, check into the airport immi-office before you check in with the airline and they will let you know if you need one or not at the time you fly (remember that the visa cancellation happens at departure NOT based on your return date if there is a problem).
