My contract ends at the end of March.. and I just had the discussion this morning with my coteacher- I said I'm in the process of figuring out where I'm going to be, but that I like working at my school, and would love the opportunity to renew.
He told me that all of the teachers and staff in my school fill out an anonymous evaluation, and if I score higher than an 80% will be offered a renewal. This thing is, I know A LOT of people who've been in public schools for more thana year, and NONE of them have ever mentioned a process that sounds REMOTELY similar.
The thing is that I think he might just be giving me the run-around and being passive aggressive in the traditional Korean style avoiding all responsibility for the decision (AKA he doesn't want me to stay)
There would be some reasons that they could claim as "valid" for not renewing me- but they're mostly political. They also didn't renew the teacher before me- who apparently wanted to stay.
That being said, my school does do everything to the letter (obnoxiously so) and follows every govt. procedure/ policy ad nauseum.
If anybody has any idea of whether I'm being railroaded or not, please reply! |

If your school likes you, they'll renew. If not, they won't. Nothing new or special here. |

Could be the run-around argument which I mentioned in an earlier thread: the one about "budget cuts".
Do you and your co-teacher get along? If not, find another teacher who can vouch for you and reapply to another school... good luck! |

Has anyone ever heard of the renewal process being like what I described above?
The budget cuts aren't affecting my school.. I'm just wondering if I need to get serious about finding a different contract for next year. |

Thats how the renewal process has always been run by epik in my province, with 70% the cut-off. |

I was told that this is how it works too last year before I was renewed.
Of course I'm pretty sure that it always comes down to whether the Principal/VP/Head teacher likes you. I'm sure they have veto power. |

And why should the teachers who have NOTHING to do with your job or the English classes at your school in general have ANY say whatsoever in your renewal?
"Oh, Bob Teacher drank soju and ate spicy Koean kimchee very well with us and sang very good Trot ballad at the noriebang during end-of-year party last semester! 100%!!"
Completely inane and stupid renewal process based almost entirely on favoritism..Such is EPIK... |

AFAIK, my renewal (two years thus far) has been entirely based on my two co-teachers and the VP and Principal. They probably looked at student evaluations as well (which I did fine on) but I don't think the opinions of other non-English teachers were considered. |

maybe you're not getting renewed because you have a propensity for making broad and insulting generalizations against the people you work for. |

Well, if your school insists on doing everything "to the letter" and your coteacher is one of those really literal people, then that's probably why he brought it up. My school is really "to the letter", but they don't bring stuff like this to my attention... yet, I've seen mysterious evaluation forms with my name on them on my coteacher's desk (no, I'm not purposely snoopy, but it's hard to ignore things that have your name on them). So, yeah, I think there really is a coteacher evaluation system. And yeah, you probably have to get 80% on those to "pass". |

I'm with Gepik and I do open classes 5-6 times a year. Normally, one for other English teachers, two or three for parents and one for Korean teachers at my school and one for the people at the local office of education.
Every year, it's the same. They take the average score of all my open classes and if I score higher than 80, then the offer to renew is there. I will be finishing up my 4th year at my school and finished my last open class two weeks ago. I was asked if I wanted to renew for March last week.
That's how my renewal has always been at my school. |
