Alright, so I've been a pc builder as long as I can remember. I'm on a laptop here in Seoul now, I'm going to go back to visit the states in the summer and was considering bringing back parts to build a mid-grade pc here. The only problem is, I'm kinda scared at how high my electric bill will be if I do so.

I'm looking at running:

I7 9xx cpu
intel mobo
6gb whateva triple channel ram
hd5870

2x2tb green drives.
750psu 80plus

This is just a rough guess at my future PC if I do decide to go ahead and build one. I'm guessing it's going to be in the 500-600watt range, and usage will be around 40 - 50 hr a week.

So, is there anyone who could give me a rough guesstimate at how much my electric bill will go up by? Thanks for any input.

Combine the i7 and 5870 with a high-efficiency PSU (80 Plus Bronze or preferably Silver) and you'll not notice a big difference in your power bill.

The 5870 has a great idle function which drops the consumption right down to under 25 watts, I think.

I'd say you could run that PC 24/7 and it would add something like 20,000 won per month to the bill.

For that kind of use, I'd say barely an increase. i7 mobos clock the chip way down when power isn't needed, and your PSU will only draw what it needs from the wall anyway. With a single video card that system won't even pull 400w overclocked at full load.

Ok, well I guess that isn't too bad at all. My elec bill is already around 18k a month, an extra 20k wouldn't be too bad at all... oh, I don't plan on leaving it on 24/7, so I guess that's even better.

maxed out, 600 watt PS = .6KW

.60 KW * 50 hrs per week = 30kwh per week * your electric rate (varies depending on your overall usage and region).

That is your max and if it isn't running full out (cores operating at 100% all the time) then it will be less (probably by 1/2).

I thought I read something about that a while ago, but I guess the 5870 uses 25w LESS than the 4890. It still uses about 140w at idle. I think....

Just did a quick check and my memory was not wrong this time......less than 27 watts consumption while running nothing but desktop, i.e. idle.

Opps! You're right, I rechecked what I read and it's 'system power consumption' that was stated. Silly me. Point to you good sir.

40-50 hrs a week is a lot of usage?

Er, I've been running my PC 24/7/365 for years! I never turn off, except when going on long vacations.

I download a lot and do other tasks like SETI@home. With a good quality, efficient power supply it really doesn't cost that much per month these days.....the CPU's and GPU's use by far the most juice, however they're much more power efficient than they used to be.

really though.. are u on some kind of tight budget? cant be anymore than 10-15 a month at the most.. then again, i really have no idea.. but i would assume its less than running a tv 40-50hrs a wk..

if ur not building this til next summer you should definitely go for the new sandy bridge processor/motherboards coming out in jan. theyre gonna be the dog bollox gamers platform of choice..and more power efficient than anything out today.

plus they have native sata 3 support and mobo manufacturers will be chucking usb 3 controllers on so its all next gen tech. i think that will keep you good for a good 2-3 years. this is also my next planned upgrade. ive been pretty patient waiting this one out and reading about guys who have overclocked sample chips upto 5.5 ghz on air has got my nipples tingling.

i'd also recomend u get a faster hd for ur system/gaming. those drives u mentioned are really just good for mass storage. something like a WD caviar black 1TB or samsung 1tb f3 will be notibly zippier.

amd will also be rolling out their new chips/chipsets so keep an eye out for those...but beside price theyve been playing catch up to intel in the last couple of chip generations. at this point i cant recommend them for a power rig (money not being a factor here)

Correct, any retailer to be exact. I used to work for Circuit City, I quit before they crashed, and moved over to Best Buy. So, I still have my string, and I'm holding on to it real tight for a lllooonnngggg time. I'm actually looking more interested in the 960 combo than the 970, I rather sink the extra $130 into the gpu and honestly have no use for the 2 extra cores. I mostly just game, and the 5870 will be the bottle neck for my system, unless the 5900's drop to mid $200 when the 6900's come out. But, I doubt it. I priced my future system to about $800.

I've been grabbing these deals for a few years ever since the q6700 came out.
