Hi everybody. I was recently offered a job by this school and wondered if anybody has worked there or knows anything about this specific school. I know SLP's reputation overall is not that great, so please refrain from generalization's about SLP as a whole. I have only seen scattered info on this particular school. This would be my first teaching job in Korea and any feedback would be very appreciated.

SLP is generalized for a very good reason. Sure, there were nice Soviets, but there were also Stalins. Keep in mind that SLP is Stalin's Labor Prerogative .
Avoid it.

You must be:
a) desperate for a job and
b) haven't read any contracts yet.

The devil is in the details. READ THE CONTRACT.

or better yet, cruise through the contract sticky and read the SLP contracts that are already posted there.

Then do the math.

You are contracted to do 300 minutes MORE classroom activity that the next hakwan monkey at the next place and will make the same money for your effort.

5 hours more per week (250 hours more classroom time per year) than the next dude.

You have been warned.

I have read my contract and I'm not desperate for a job, otherwise I would have already taken this one without doing any research. Like I said, I've heard these stories, but I also know not every school is the same. Maybe it is in this case, but firsthand knowledge of a particular school is more helpful than negative opinions of all SLPs, even if warranted.

ttompatz is 100% wrong.

I only say that now, because it rarely happens.

I should know, I worked at SLP in Ilsan. You'll work the same as other people at hagwons, and unlike your friends you'll be paid on time and in full. In fact, if you end up at the Beakma (DongIlsan) you'll be able to meet some of the best Korean people I've ever met. I know one of the teachers there is leaving to try to work at the US State department, and two others are re-signing. Two more are have contracts that end later in the year.

Rarely will you find an atmosphere as good as what is there. Sure, from time to time people have some issues, it is a job after all. But those issues are never serious (like not getting paid or getting screwed out of your medical).

They DON'T follow the standard SLP contract and guidelines of 21 classes of "80" minutes (per week) with the 10 minute break at mid class (meaning 21 classes of 90 minutes per week)?

Correct.

I worked an hour of kindy, 80 minute block of 1st and 2nd graders and one 100 minute block with 3rd and 4th graders every day five days a week. Then, on MWF I worked an extra 60 minute block with 5th and 6th graders. This totals out to 1080 minutes of teaching, or 18 hours in class teacher per week.

Look, I understand that SLP is often times a really crappy job. However, as far as hagwons go, this is a pretty dang good one. You'll live in a great location in Ilsan, two blocks from Lafesta. If you split a cab back from Hongdae it's like 7,000 per person. You've got Costco, and Lake Park right here. Plus the area near Kintex is growing rapidly.

Thanks for the the info, whiteshoes. I know contracts are usually reserved for that specific section of the forums, but since the "devil is in the details," I thought I'd post this for reference. They were up front in the interview that Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday would be longer days. When I had a question on my contract, I emailed them and they called me from Korea within a half hour. I don't know whether that means anything or not. Anyway, I am a newbie so feel free to tear this apart.

TEACHER OBLIGATIONS

A. Supervision

The teacher will work closely with academic supervisor and other colleagues in the planning, observation, and review of instruction.

As a member of the Institute, the teacher will contribute to the cumulative experience, wisdom, and resources of a team dedicated to developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive program for teaching English to Koreans.

The above leaves will be included in the period of medical care compensation according to the Article 78 of Korean Labor Standard Law.

F. Airfare

A few years ago, I had a friend working there. He was averaging 8 more hours per week at school than I. The big difference that year was: he worked about 400 hours more than I, and I pocketed about 2,000,000 won more than him.

Do yourself a favor and find something better.

Even with that, a cursory glance at the contract raises a great deal of issues that I, personally if I was going to sign that, would want rewritten or taken out altogether. 18 hours a year sick leave? It wouldn't matter how great the place was to work with that for me. This means that if you have two 7 hours days and then an eight hour day, for argument sake, you would be unpaid for those final four hours? I don't like that clause at all.

OP, I've had a look over the contract on the contract thread. Perhaps one or two others can suggest problems with the contract. I've made my suggestions in the sticky.
