Last week I went to the Gangnam DLA to get my Korean driver's license. All websites I've checked made this sound easy, so I was surprised when I was told I had to have an Embassy Certificate. Have policies changed? Everything I looked at said that US citizens don't need this. Just wondering if I got a new person at the DLA who doesn't know what they're talking about or if this is true. (If I do need the cert., can anybody tell me they cost?) Any info is much appreciated. |

You should go to the DMV not the DLA. |

To get back your dirver's license you must present yourself at the DLA office.
You must bring your passport and your airline ticket with you (e-tickets are accepted). |
So does that mean if you leave the country you can get your original license back without giving back your Korean license? |

I am a Canadian citizen and I was told that I needed to get a certificate from my embassy telling that my licence was in fact valid. I believe this certificate costs about $60. I believe that all nationalities have to do this because other foreigners were trading in fake licences.
You also need three pictures, your passport, and of course your licence. Once you are at the DMV you need to do an eye test and then move your hands and legs to show that they are working properly, typical Korea...haha.
Hope this helps |

Is it issued immediately or do I have to wait for it to be delivered? |

I'm also a little worried that if I try to get my American drivers license back (for when I return to the states) that I'll have to do the whole driver's license run around again when I return to Korea. Does anybody know what the process is for getting an old license back while retaining the K license? |

Ya, contact the state tell them you lost your license and then you have a Korean and US license..... |

Sorry OP. Didn't mean to sound sarcastic. Koreans long ago told me it was the DMV and I believed them.
Foreigners with fake/revoked licences.
Do you need a certificate from your embassy if you are getting a Korean licence renewed? I have an old one and it will be up soon. |

I wonder if this applies to UK drivers too- considering you get issued a counterpart (which proves the validity of your license).
I have a IDP in any case. I assume there are no problems hiring a car for a day at least? |

The korea4expats link is out of date. No point in quoting it. the actual government website doesn't mention any country exemptions anymore. Since a Canadian (who was previously exempted) said they needed one, I would say every Canadian needs one. |
