I've been thinking about what to do next summer, other than my ususal do a camp and have a week hols somewhere.

I should have 2 and a 1/2 months more or so. June, July and most of August.

I would like to go somewhere and work there for a month or two months and get some idea what the country is like. I'm thinking Australia, China or Japan. I have no idea on the feasibility of working in any of these countries for such a short period of time.

Anyone have any experience of this? If I can't work I might do something like go to China and take language classes or something along those lines. Anyone done something like this?

Why not just be a budget backpacker for 2 1/2 months? There are oodles of destinations where you can rent for $5 to $10 a night though it wouldn't be comfortable if bringing a wife and kids. I actually rented guesthouse rooms for like $6.50 a night in Bangkok and $10 to $15 in Myanmar which were more than OK. A couple sharing gets by for less $ per person than an individual. I bet you could get by on a shoestring in China, but not Japan and Australia. I'm not sure about Australia and Japan being affordable, but I understand those are pricey countries where the $10 a night room and $15 a day driver aren't possible unless you have a friend to help you. Maybe that couch surfing website could lead to an adventure in Australia you can actually afford to do for 2 months? It will be Winter down under next June through August so you'll be getting an extra shot of Winter if going during our Summer.

Getting a job in Australia as a backpacker is a doddle. At worst you can generally find a hostel that will get you to do oddjobs for room+board.

Australia is pretty expensive though. Hostels will generally set you back at least 15-25 AUD per night depending on the city, and food/drink ain't cheap, plus stuff to do during the day.

Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, China, these places you can get by on a tiny budget if you don't mind roughing it.

Maybe japan is out then. I have loads of friends in Australia at the minute as well as family in Melbourne. That might be the best option.

Has anyone been to China for a language course or worked there over a vacation? I'd like to go somewhere cool/interesting and stay there for the month/2 months. I'm not much for travelling around every few days.
