A week before December and this rural school hasn't turned on the heat yet! Everyone wears parkas and half the students are hacking. They can't be THAT broke!

It's the same as everything else in korea that is temperature based in the rest of the world. The caledar is king here. No beaches until July 1st. No air-conditioning at school until XX date (summer begins). No heat until XX date (winter begins).

My school, after repeated request for heat that were turned down by the principal and CFO at my school, has told me that it will not be cold until Dec. 1st - the day the heat will be turned on.

In my school, King Principal gets as much heat as he wants. I heard his office is like a sauna. The VP's office/main teacher's office gets some. Other teachers' offices (at least, the one I'm in) only gets it when the temp goes below 0 celsius. I think it went below 0 today, but no heat.

If I were freezing and the principal got as much heat in his office as he/she wanted, I'd walk in to their office and say "You're not special. I want heat, too."

But they ARE special. That's why when we have sports day, somebody puts leather armchairs on the shaded, elevated area in front of the sports field, so the king and the vice chancellor may sit and observe the frivolities, whilst holding court. I'm surprised the administrative staff doesn't follow them around with parasols when they walk to their cars...

I'm allowed to turn the heat on in my room (in fact, the maintenance man walks into my room and turns the heat on for me, even if I'm comfortable without it) but the other teachers are not allowed to turn the heat on in their rooms. They said the principal wants to keep the foreign teacher happy so I'm allowed extra benefits.

Well that's great for me, but I don't feel good about it. I don't want special treatment. Plus, the hallways and the other classrooms are freezing half the time.

I saw an infomercial for an electric floor pad you can plug in and sit on. I should get one and refuse to sit in a chair. I could start a trend.

Nevertheless, this is one kind of special treatment you shouldn't complain about.

Why do we have chairs? I came to Asia to sit on the floor, dammit. On the roasty, toasty floor.

As much as me and my co-workers complain about our jobs (technical highschool) they do turn the heat on religiously. Going home to my freezing rooftop villa is always disappointing however.

We could be twins!

My tech hs is the same way, all the heat is on and controllable in the class, so much so that I have notes on all the heaters not to touch them. The kids love to set them to 30 and then open the windows...

Never had this problem with the heat. My 3 little rural school crank it up early. But if it gets too hot they open the windows instead of turning off the heat for a little while.

Now the AC is a different story. They don't like to turn it on until it's real hot.

They rarely heat the school for more than 30 mins when they actually do turn the heaters on. I'm quite toasty in my new English zone office though, we've got a nice mobile heater.
