never been there. Wanted to return to Phuket, haven't been there for a LONG time... but friend says it's overrun with Germans flying in daily from Frankfurt. (not sure whether this is a good or bad thing)
but bottom line is Phuket is too expensive in January (high season)
staying in BKK all month is too expensive.. but I'll probably spend 10- 14 days there.
then I was thinking of 2 weeks in Koh Samui. Looks like I can get decently priced lodging based on some links I was looking at.
thoughts, ideas, suggestions?
Lamai or Chewang? |

Two weeks in Samui is a looooooooooooooooong time. There's plenty to do, but I would advise a side trip over to Koh Phangan if you get the chance.
There's a great little beach on the NE corner called Thong Nai Pan Yai. Take a ferry from Big Buddha pier to Thongsala and get a truck/taxi from there. It'll take you a few hours to get there, but the serenity will be a welcome break from the stuff on Samui. |

There was a direct boat to Thong Nai Pan from Big Buddha when I last went there in 2007. Not sure if this still runs, but Thong Nai Pan is definitely worth some of your time. |

| I'd suggest getting into Koh Phangan early day, renting a scooter, and then touring the island your self and then pick the spot you like best...Phangan was my favorite place in Thailand... |

why would 2 weeks be too "long"?
I'm perfectly content just tanning, chillin, doing some sightseeing, and hitting the gym (I assume those will be around)
thanks for the suggestions on Koh Phangan, I'll look into that.
ferries there from Koh Samui? or how does one get there?

| I'm no Samui expert, but I agree 2 weeks is a bit long (for most people). If you're cool with the same environs for that long a time, then you'll be fine, but for me after a week there I was ready to move on. Not that there was anything wrong with the place, it's just that even paradise gets a little old after a while. |

takes me several days just to decompress and get acclimated, so a week almost anywhere (unless I've been there before and find it boring/old, etc) will never bore me.
I also tend to hate to overly travel during my vacation time, unless the goal is to specifically do a lot of moving and traveling. It's time consuming and annoying. |

I stayed in Chaweng and I just went to a travel agent, and bought the ferry ticket to Koh Phangan. They even picked me up from my hotel and took me to the ferry. Easy peasy.
I spent 4 days in Chaweng, Koh Samui just layin on the free beach chairs all day long... |

Don't waste your time with Samui. The beaches on the islands on the Andamen sea such as Phuket. Phi Phi Island are much better.
The Night life on Samui is just so /so. It's not as good as Phuket but marginally better than Krabi. Another reason not to go toSamui is there are so many ways to be roped into a situation where you are paying way to much for accomidation.
The beaches on Samui are short, not a lot sand space. They are usually cluttered with lots of recliners and umbrella's. The water is murky. You can't see any fish.
If you take those day tours from Krabbi you can visit islands that have clear water. You can stand waste high and see the fish swim around you. |

Phi Phi is best to do as a day tour either via Krabi or Phuket. Most of the tours involve a high speed boat . You can snorkle and swim and then go back to your cheap guest house in Krabi town. You can also do tons of day tours from Krabi town and accomidation is really low. On the down side Krabi Town has a bit of a small town feel. If you are looking for something a little more exciting go to Au Nang beach. |

I agree the Big Buddha is pretty impressive by Kho Samui standards.
But there are tons of that kind of stuff all over Thailand. |

I was REALLY unimpressed with both the Thais and the tourists when I went there 2 years ago. The Thais were openly hostile to you And the tourists were drunken Eurotrash soccer hooligan type. There was this snobbery when they figured out you were American. And the French and German tourists looked at you like you were a slave trader when you told them you taught English.
My favorite part was trying to go anywhere. You'd ask to be taken to the next town over and they would asked for a ridiculously inflated price. Or worse they'd take you to some other place entirely, run by their cousin and pester you to stay there or buy some cheap shit.
It was really just an awful place for me. And I was ready to get out after about the 3rd day. Truly an awful awful place. |
