You know the tins of Kimchi that are sold in Incheon Airport (with the overbearing saleswomen trying to get your attention)?

Could those tins of Kimchi survive a 24 hour journey home (12 hr flight + more travelling by car)?

I'd like to know because i'd like to bring gifts home for the folks at Christmas (they've never eaten Kimchi before).

Unless it's vacuum sealed it's going to literally smell like a fart by the time you get home.

One time I was in Chicago in the summer and I bought some kimchi in a jar at the Korean mart in the afternoon, and put it in the trunk of my car. I went over to a friend's house and we went out for dinner and a couple drinks. By the time I got back to my car a few hours later the entire car smelled like horrible flatulence from the warmed-up kimchi in the trunk.

Agreed on the smell. And you'll never get it out of anything else packed with it.

Yeah, exactly... the kimchi will survive... but you and the other passengers may not! Razz

I've bought these before (if they are the tins with a vacuum packed sachet inside.) Half the time they blow up with gas and are have to be thrown away.

The whole point of kimchi is as a preservation method, it's not going to spoil.

I`ve brought kimchi back home a few times and It`ll be fine... though overpriced (obviously) if you get it from the airport.

Yeah that's the problem with kimchi--it's still fermenting, which produces gases. So you can't vacuum seal it for long, or the pressure will build up and the container will explode!

I didn't have any problem with the kimchi tin, although my family wasn't fond of the kimchi (I ended up eating it myself).
