|
|
Recently had a friend assemble me a fast new nice desktop unit for a modest sum & I'm altogether happy with its performance but I want a better monitor. This used 15" crd just doesnt do it justice.
I hardly know the first thing about computers but I'm after a snazzier display. Something a bit bigger & vibrant -- any suggestions? I'm thinking 17" lcd would be sufficient, game to spend around 500k won. Any advice welcomed. Thanks! |

I just got a 19inch for 600,000. There is a site online that has price comparisons and you can get it delivered to your home. I forgot the site. I'll ask my friend tomorrow if I remember. |

If you get a flat panel, make sure it's not one of the cheapies without a DVI port. The lifespan of an LCD flat panel is a lot longer than a CRT so chances are you're going to have it around for a while- don't skimp on quality. |

Remember that the far higher definition of LCD panels vs. CRT monitors means a LCD monitor of a given size will *seem* bigger/clearer than the corresponding CRT. My 15 is plenty big... feels larger than your typical 17 inch PC bang screen.
I'm a huge fan of LCD monitors as they seem to be much easier on the eyes. But the best CRT monitors still have somewhat better color rendition for graphics work. |

I agree with the lemon.I went with a Samsung LCD 15inch for 450,000 at Technomart. It seems like a 17 inch regular screen to me. There's not a lot of trim around the edges. Samsungs are very clear and crisp. |

Expect to pay around 300~350,000w online for off-brand monitors with Samsung TFT-LCD 15inch screens. They've come down in price by about 100,000w in the last year.
CRT monitors are about half that. But they're not nearly as cool! |

1st point, yeh, I'm coming off a 15" laptop & this present CRT unit seems, well, scrunched. Why is that? I'm still thinking a step up to 17" might be fun though. Are there any drawbacks when you go bigger?
2nd point, 'easier on the eyes' sounds a big plus & high-end color rendition isnt so important to me, so I guess I'm sold on LCD.
How do you judge quality sight unseen though? I'll likely order over the net as computer shops out in the woods here are way pricy. Specs I should be looking for? Brands with solid reps? My young Korean consultant says Samsung makes good product -- true?
(Edit: thanks Shawner & Lemon -- your posts popped up before I finished typing.) |

Not really, except money. Buy as large as you can afford? I suppose there's the issue of desktop space, but that's minor.

Specs? There are some good "how to buy an LCD monitor" guides online, just do a quick search. Pay attention to the viewing angles the monitor will support, as well as the range between black and white it can handle (how white is white, and how black is black? They have numbers for this). There's also the issue of how many dots it has per inch, but I wouldn't worry so much about that.
I also wouldn't care too much about the brand, assuming you're going to be in Korea for the next year. I bought a Korean no-name monitor with a Samsung LCD in it last year, and got great service from the company when it had power problems. They tek-baed a new one to me within a day. Been happy ever since. |
