I will be having my first child in Korea later on this year. My husband is a Korean and has his health insurance at work and I have my health insurance at my hagwon. For those of you who have children here, is it possible to add the child to a current policy or do we have to get separate health insurance for the baby? |

Why are you paying for health insurance twice? You should be on your husbands plan or he on yours. You are paying double for insurance when you don't have to. |

If one of you has NHIC then then you can enroll the baby on your plan for free.
Just fill in the form and wait for the new booklet (with the addition of the baby) to arrive.
If you are talking about private insurance, then I don't know about adding an infant.

I assume as a long term or permanent resident, you would have two kinds of insurance. You'd have the National Health Insurance and private insurance to cover the rest or the things that the government insurance doesn't fully cover, like an unexpected surgery. Which I should be having myself. (Additional private insurance.) |

I dont actually have two types of insurance - i just have the standard NHIC insurance as Im aware. I guess i should also look into getting private insurance.
Like right now I pay 50% of my insurance and my boss pays the other 50%. So if there any real benefit of adding myself to my husbands health insurance - wouldnt we just have to them pay for my insurance oursleves.
I find this whole thing quite confusing to be honest |

Check with the hospital where you will be having your baby. They often have plans available for infants. Regarding NHIC it is a simple process for adding your child, but as far as family private insurance, the child must have his or her own policy. I know this from when our daughter was born two years ago. Their is no "family coverage" like back in the home country. We pay separate premiums for our daughter to have her own policy and that is the way the Korean system is set up. Check out Baby Fairs as they usually have a swamp full of insurance people selling new-born insurance policies. Shop around though. Some of the policies are a real rip-off. PM me if you want more information and I can get back to you on it. |

You can add a baby (and/or a spouse, should either of you decide to quit) to National Insurance very easily.
However, I do recommend getting baby insurance, which you will need to sign up for while you are still pregnant. We use Hyundai, and it's already paid for itself. |
