So I lost my wallet last night with my ARC, Bank card, T-money, and most importantly free kebab.
I only have three months left on my contract then back to Chicago and I want to know if I really need to get another ARC. |

| Yes, if for no other reason than you'll be fined if you don't hand it in at the airport when you leave. |

On a related issue:
Is it a problem if the expiration date on my card is unreadable?
When I extended my stay they wrote the new expiration date with permanent marker on the back. The only problem is that it wasn't so permanent. After a few months in my wallet it's completely unreadable. Will it make any problems at the airport? Should I go to the immigration office and have them rewrite it, or will they just look it up in their database and see that it's fine? If I could remember the expiration date I guess I could have tried to make the writing more clear myself, but I have no idea when it is except that it is some time next summer. |

10k won and a bit of time to get a replacement at your local immigration office. Keeps you legal. Also, you can't replace your bank card without it.
100k won fine at the airport if you don't have it when you leave.
Black mark (immigration violation) in your immigration file (makes it harder to come back should you ever decide to).
I would take a morning and go get it.

As long as YOU know when you have to be out by (don't make a mistake for obvious reasons) you are fine.
You can also get it fixed at your local office when it is convenient for you (in case you need it for something else later).

| Living in a foreign country without ID seems a bit idiotic to me. Worst case scenario, you're involved in an accident - how do they identify you to inform your next of kin, workplace, etc etc? |

Depends on how lazy and how rich you are.
If you're lazy and rich, just pay the 100,000won fine for trying to leave the airport without one.
If your not too lazy, then go sit at immigration for 2 hours, pay a 10,000won fee and get a new one.
The time that you spent posting this thread on here and sitting around waiting for answers, you could have had a new one by now.
p.s. - don't get off the chair and cancel your bankcard yet - I still have some more shopping to do with that yet. |

| I agree that you should get it. I have, however, replaced my bank card with my passport and bank book. |

Make an appointment and sit there for 5 minutes. |

Just curious. How does immigration know that you are leaving for good? Couldn't you just say you are going on vacation and will be returning? |

Assuming you're not pulling a runner, your visa will be expiring when you're leaving. |

Not necessarily, but if your ARC and visa haven't expired yet, the immigration officer at the airport will ask you if you're coming back to Korea again or not. If you say "yes" they let you keep your ARC, if you say "no" they take it from you. |
