I read this comment on a newspaper opinions webpage and I realised if that is the sole argument then we could simply change one word and it would still be an applicable argument. But what then?

Quote:
we should abolish ALL religion - it just creates hate and disharmony.

I will give you examples of what I mean.

We should abolish ALL politics - it just creates hate and disharmony.

We should abolish ALL disenting views from ours - it just creates _______.

We should abolish ALL what we consider non acceptable sexual practices - it just creates -----

Take a second to consider the original argument and think for a second what type of world we would live in if that was an acceptable point.

Lets just remove what we think causes problems and all the world would be wonderful.

Who decides that, what examples justify it? When do we the human race come up with a perfect world? Is it even possible?

Who decides what doesn't cause problems? I grew up in a pc developing world. It was lauded as the future, its seen as problematic today. multiculturalism - ditto.

When was the argument if ''we get rid of this!'' the world will be perfect, created? There are 18 pages of comments and many seem to say the same thing in different ways.

The argument needs to be determined, but who decides?

I'm a firm believer of the 'you can never make eveyrone happy' and 'we'll always find something or someone to complain about' ideas.

You could abolish everything that we believe to be the route of problems and live in a perfect utopia, and there will always be that one person that the walls should've been painted blue and not yellow.

As for who decides... I guess at the moment, it's majority votes, or who has the most compelling arguement. I doubt the answer would be either black or white though.

I think you are missing the emphasis on the word 'Just' I think the original writer was trying to emphasis that he felt religion had no upside - unlike your examples which most people would argue do have upsides - certainly i think the original writer would make that distinction - however I shall say no more or express my own opinions and would refer you to the Sticky on religion threads.

"We should abolish ALL religion - it just creates hate and disharmony"

Are you talking about present continous of the model verbs, expressing
abilty or giving advice? You need re-emhasise the subject noun in the
second part of the sentence and change 'able to " to "would be".
No need to use just after the "be" form.

1.If we were to abolish all religon, then we would be creating hate and disharmony.
2. You should_________ becasue it is causing problems.
3. If we were in Korea, then we would be having lots of fun.

I like how the thread title insinuates that the goal is to cause problems.
It makes me envision Gargamel and Skeletor in some kind of villainous meeting.

But seriously, I get what you're saying. I am the easily offended, but I am totally against censorship or banning things that piss me off. People should just learn to be frackin' adults instead of needing others to tell them what is "right" or "wrong".
