If any of you are teaching preschool age--what do you find works best for 4 year olds? Have already done lots of stories/songs/fingerplays and obviously an actual textbook doesn't work so well (or does it? Do you have any recommendations?) Three times per week45 minutes each--am running out of ideas.
Any suggestions? |

texbooks wouldnt work because hey don't even know how to read in their own language.
try arts and crafts. stuff they can bring home and show their parents, like a body part gingerbread man for the Chrismas season. |

Wet wipes.
Yeah, TRP type stuff is best. Try some simple baking stuff; make cookie dough, sandwiches... |

There are ESL textbooks available for very young learners. It can depend on their fine motor skills, some Korean 4 year olds can barely pick up a pencil while others will be able to pick up writing numbers and letters more easily.
I have a class of 4 year olds who I see for 20 minutes a day. We do a simple math book (writing numbers, counting to 10, lots of colouring), and a language book with, again, lots of colouring, but also letters to trace. Some of the storybooks come with activity books, we do the Step Into Reading Level 1 books. Admittedly, some of them just scrawl over their books with coloured pencils while others will do really well! |

How many do you have in the class? If its a small class (5 or less) I find the rock paper scissors games on www.esl-kids.com work really well. I teach them the vocab using flashcards, going through the words a couple of times and showing them the card and first one to shout out the word wins the card. Then we play the game, its only 2 at a time, so you can make it teams, or with some vocab i get the other students to ask ta question ie, how's the weather today. This part often gets forgotten about pretty quickly but they get something from it until the excitement takes over. |
