I am not currently working in Korea, so this is purely hypothetical and for informational purposes.
However, supposing that I were working in Korea, and supposing that I got fired before the six-month mark, would I be allowed to change jobs in-country, without making a visa run?
I know that if I quit, I can't.
However, what if my hagwon or PS sacks me?
And if fired, am I legally entitled to a Letter of Release? |

Actually if you quit, you have a better chance of getting the release letter. I know that sounds strange, but if the hagwon owner fires you then it's because they don't like you and you are considered a "bad apple". So they are less likely to work with you. If you go to them and give them notice and allow to work a little bit without pay, then they are more likely to allow it because they can get another teacher and extend the time before they have to pay for a flight home, severance, and vacation time.
In either case, don't cut things off with the school. Be nice, fake it, whatever. Koreans are big on politeness, so if you are rude you will get the boot. If you are overly nice, they will at least recognize it (and a few times they will be nice back, pretend to feel lucky when this happens ). |

Each case is adjudicated on it's own merits but typically, you will NOT be allowed to transfer UNLESS your school has become insolvent (bankrupt) and had to let you go.
IN most other cases it won't matter if you quit, get fired or have a release letter - you will NOT be allowed the transfer if you are under the 6 month mark.
You will need a new visa for a new job AND if your boss is NOT willing to accompany you to immigration to cancel your visa you will need to exit Korea to enable the cancellation, apply for your new job and new visa confirmation number and THEN make ANOTHER visa run to an adjacent country to get your NEW visa.

Weren't you posting in the recent "I can get my F visa through points" thread? I thought you were right on the doorstep of getting it....guess now that you aren't working here, that's gone? |

Points-wise, I'm only 2 points away.
HOWEVER, I need to survive in Korea on an E-visa for one year first.
I'm thinking about returning to Korea, working for one year, and then getting the F-2-7, but I'm a little bit afraid of getting canned and having one year on an E-visa stretch out to more than one year. |
