Hello,

Im 29, currently doing an online 120 hour TEFL course. I have a BAA and a Masters degree but not in English. I am thinking about starting out in Korea.

Is the TEFL certificate enough to get me a decent job?

What's it like teaching English in Korea?

Have most of you had positive or negative experiences?

Also, how much money should I be expecting to start on?

Thanks,

Mike

Short answer to your question.

IF you have:
a) bachelors degree,
b) passport from one of: US, Canada, UK, Ireland, NZ, Australia, or South Africa,
you can get a job as a teacher in Korea. A TEFL cert is NOT required and typically not even acknowledged.

If you do not hold a passport from one of the "approved" 7 countries then you cannot get legal work in Korea.

Salaries for newbies run from 2.0-2.3 million won per month plus benefits. A quick look at the jobs board listings would have answered that for you.

As to the "what is it like, tell about your experiences, don't be lazy. read back a few pages.

Any newbie who doesn't have the time to read back, check the FAQs or look at the job listings doesn't have the time to get on a plane.

Airfare for 1 flight is more than enough, so plan 2 flights. The reason for this is in case the school won't reimburse you and you need to leave. If they reimburse you then you will have about 1 month's salary. Plenty of money to start yourself. I had nothing and spent under 400,000 my first month.

You can get by on a lot less, but if you can swing having US$1,000 to start, you will be OK.
