Hello! I am an experienced 34 year old teacher from the United States. I have been teaching here in MA, where I am from, for about 5 years. I am ready to take my teaching on the road and don't know where to begin. I am looking for a position that is reliable, hopefully offering accomodations. I am open to where the location is. I would like to make a comfortable living salary but that is not my number 1 concern. I need to enjoy where I am living and to feel accepted by the community. Please, please help me on where and how to start. I have been going it alone and feel suggestions from people actually doing it is the best bet. And how much start up/ savings do I need to be safe?
THANK YOU to anyone kind enough to take the time to offer advice! |

With a teaching license, Korea might not be your best bet especially if you're looking for a real community to fall into. With your qualifications you might want to look at some of the non-entry level positions in other parts of Asia and Hong Kong.
If you're set on coming to Korea though, look at any jobs that require your experience/qualifications. Don't settle for entry level stuff. Find a nice International School. |

| I would look into DOD schools, they're all over the world and they have great benefits. |

| Ok. I kinda thought Korea might be out. I want to feel goodness expressed in the community around me. I have heard Vietnam is a great experience, but again, I have no ties or friends who have done this. With the suggestions you are nice enough to give me, can you give me specific advice? What cities in China? I don't know what the the schools are that are offered all over the world. What would you do if you were looking? Where would you look? I am worried about being taken advantage of, escpecially considering my experience. I have lived abroad, but only as an undergrad/postgrad. This has always been my dream, which is why I went into the field. Thanks guys! also cool... In the sun. "In the sun I feel like one." Me too. |

Look at the Hong Kong NET program.
Look at a public school positions in Taiwan.
Look at IB or international schools anywhere (but Thailand is a nice place to be).
Vietnam pays well for certified teachers.
In China, just about anywhere is fine but don't settle for the 3000-6000rmb positions. As a certified teacher you should hold out for 8-12000 + benefits.

You won't be accepted by the local community, at least you certainly won't integrate. I would look to other Asian countries e.g. Singapore; HK. Consider an international school in one of these places. |

Korea is not a good place for qualified teachers. Unless you work for an international school, and even then I am not sure.
Most people that teach English here are right out of university with no work experience and have degrees in everything but education.
Also, Korean co teachers would just treat you like every other foreign teacher, meaning they wouldnt care if you were a qualified teacher and assume youre just another loser that couldnt make it in their home country.
Hagwon teachers would also treat you like a moron and think they were better teachers with their 2 year degree in hotel management from Australia. |
