If anyone has rented or driven a car in Thailand or is planning to do so please post your experiences. It sounds like a great way of exploring the island.
I'm probably only going to be in Phuket a day or so and then use it as a base for going to Koh Phi Phi. I'd like to be able to access the beaches difficult or expensive for the average tourist there to go. And to be honest, I'd just like to explore around as I haven't driven a car in a while and miss the freedom a little bit.
What kind of rates should I expect? Any stories or negative experiences? Any places in particular I should check out? Also, is it really ok not to have an international drivers license like some websites say?
I'm also considering renting a moped since I'll be a solo traveler but it sounds a lot more dangerous. Honestly, I wouldn't mind forking over a little more cash for a small car since it'll only be for a day or so. |

Don't drive yourself.
Hire a car with driver. Safer, cheaper and every cop on the island won't see you as a walking (driving) donation machine. The driver will also keep the car and your belongings safe when you are on the beach or away from the car.
Peak season but you should still be able to hire a car and driver for about b1000 per day (plus gas and meals).
It is also worthy to note that unless you have an IDP it is illegal for you to drive here. Also note that driving is on the left (like the UK) and not on the right (like the USA).
