Suffice to say, the Pink Panther movies are almost certainly his crowning achievement, though their brilliance probably owed as much to Sellers as to Edwards(same with The Party). As I recall, most critics thought that Edwards did himself little credit by trying to keep the Pink Panther going after Sellers passed away.
After a certain point, his output started to take on the air of the Silent Generation trying to keep up with hip Baby Boomers. I watched his 90s comedy Switch a few years back, and at one point, a character meant to be understood as a Casanova is seen jumping into a hot-tub with three beautiful women. Something about a hot-tub as a symbol of sexual decadence seemed typical of Edwards' overall worldview.
It was nice to see him honored at the Oscars a few years back, by no less a reigning titan of comedy than Jim Carrey.
