If you have a plasma TV, do NOT unplug it (unless you're going on vacation or moving) or turn off power to the outlet on the power strip that the TV is connected to. Serious damage to the power board inside can result by unplugging the TV or cutting off power to it.

Turning off the outlet is the same as pulling the plug and is not advised. On an unlucky day, the inside components could burn when you plug it again (or when you turn on the extension outlet).

Plugging the plasma directly to a wall outlet is the best.

When turning off a plasma TV, using the remote will put it on stand-by. If you press the power button on the TV body itself, it completely cuts power without the risk involved in pulling the plug.

What damage occurs?

If you've had a problem by doing this, I'm going to blame old or faulty equipment over the power involved, as what you describe is a powercut, powercuts don't break TVs? Or computers, or anything else thats plugged in either.

Lightning strikes to phone poles break modems, thats happened to me, computer was and still is fine though.

If that's the case, you just need to hit the power button on the TV before you pull the plug. That's important because apparently hitting the remote button doesn't do the trick.

This. I had a plasma TV back home. You must make sure the TV is completely off before cutting power.

You should NEVER plug an expensive electronic directly into the outlet! Always use a surge protector.

On a somewhat related note. Do Korean power strips have built in surge protectors?? That would be good to know.

Only if it specifies it does, so generally no. Korean plugs don't even have a fuse in them ffs...
