Help! I am having a holiday party at my school. I want to buy a cheese tray, crackers, candy canes, hot chocolate and Christmas cookies. All of these things are at Cosco. Unfortunately, we have to pay cash there. And our school will not let us take out more than 50,000 won at a time, or we have to pay with credit card. Is there another place where I can find these things?

Thanks!

Would they reimburse you if you brought a receipt and agreed upon a limit ahead of time?

Apparently not. I asked my CT already, and she said that it isn't an option.

Hot Chocolate is available everywhere. You could get Danish cookies which are more available as well. Trays are also available. The only thing that I'd say you'd find hard to get are the Candy canes which may become more available when the time approaches. Not really seeing why Cosco has to factor in it at all.

If the school refuses to budge on the policy, get a bunch of kimbap and juice for the party and let that be the end of it. Don't worry yourself if they aren't going to be accommodating.

Well, Costco is still the only definitive place I know where to find these things. Any suggestions on where to look?

This is the truth or buy some stuff at E-Mart with their credit card. DO NOT SPEND YOUR OWN MONEY UNLESS YOU WILL BE REIMBURSED.

Also any cheese you buy will go uneaten or unappreciated.

You can get Swiss Miss at E-Mart and, close to Christmas, there will be some things available at all of the bigger stores (E-Mart, LotteMart, Homeplus), like- Christmas cards, Santa hats, lots of candy, some decorations (cheap ones), and some other strange things that will surprise you. Just get some Santa hats, decorations, and the usual party stuff like juice, cookies, chocopies, and candy, and the students will be happy. You can't give them an authentic Christmas experience, but do your best with what is available and what they like and you'll be fine. Sing some carols and show some Christmas videos from youtube and they'll be happy.

BTW, if you do a special Christmas lesson, I like to show that many people volunteer during Christmas and donate to charities to help others. Even if you are not Christian it's still a positive thing to show everyone about this season of giving. It's a good thing to show to Korean kids and maybe they'll see why this is such a good time.

Why don't you check out one of the websites that sell Costco supplies, such as www.ezshopkorea.com or www.nicedeli.com ... there are more as well! Then, you can pay with a CC, and have the items shipped to you!

Merry Christmas!

If it's something you really want to do, I'd personally just suck it up and pay out of pocket. Unlike some of the cheap pricks on this site, if I like my co-teachers, I certainly don't mind spending a little cash on them to show my appreciation. A cheese platter, however, may or may not go over well. Likewise w/ the candy canes. The cookies will probably be a hit. The younger teachers may appreciate the cheese, but the older ones would likely just as well have some songpyeon and sweet potatoes.

Errr, this wasn't the case for me. I bought some sharp cheddar at Costco last year and cut half of the block into little pieces, brought it into work with some toasted garlic bread from Paris Baguette. The cheese was gone in MINUTES and the K-teachers were telling me how delicious it was, asking where I got it, etc.

Have you ever bought decent cheese for Koreans and it went unappreciated, or are you just making an assumption?

Buying treats for workmates is one thing. Funding the entire holiday party for an entire staff is entirely different. The products she's suggesting are expensive in Korea, and, depending on the school, could cost at least a few hundred thousand if for everyone. I made fudge for all of the teachers at my school last year and that cost over a hundred thousand.
