Quote:
She says that the four men who ran the smuggling operation all Chinese or South Koreans took her into their office on 36th Street in Midtown Manhattan. They beat her with their fists (but did not hit her in the face, for that might damage her commercial value), gang-raped her and videotaped her naked in humiliating poses. For extra intimidation, they held a gun to her head.

If she continued to resist working as a prostitute, she says they told her, the video would be sent to her relatives and acquaintances back home. Relatives would be told that Yumi was a prostitute, and several of them would lose their homes as well.

Yumi caved. For the next three years, she says, she was one of about 20 Asian prostitutes working out of the office on 36th Street. Some of them worked voluntarily, she says, but others were forced and received no share in the money.

Pretty compelling read. Girls being tricked into coming to the US, only to become prostitutes is nothing new. Unfortunate that the victim could've lived a productive life as an accountant if she had stayed in China.

What a horrible thing to happen.

I have one answer to her question, though, as to how this could happen to someone who's college educated:

She was lacking common sense. Females-only smugglers? Smuggler's fees? If that didn't raise a whole bunch of red flags, she wasn't that smart, even if educated.

I feel for her. I hope she has a good life from here on.

Pimps and traffickers are known to be some smooth liars, so I imagin that common sense wouldn't help as much as having some street smarts. How many young Asian women are raised to have those?

Not only Asian woman, how many kids? A lot of kids may think they have street sense, but if it ever came down to it they'd be just as naive.

They're one in the same, no?

I feel for her.

Agreeing to being smuggled in a female-only smuggling ring? I mean, really...

I hope she can use this experience to educated other women. Apparently many need it.

In my opinion, common sense isn't quite the same as street smarts because if you have common sense, you tend to stay out of situations that require a lot of street smarts.

Street smarts are a set of skills. People learn them from doing things like traveling, living in a bad neighborhood, or from interacting with the shady people at the downtown bus stop. You learn to observe your environment very carefully, to be on your guard, and to trust your gut. You might learn some of these skills from someone who has them already, and you might learn others from experience.

Sometimes common sense and street smarts intersect. Like if you think someone is lying or trying to rip you off, they probably are. However, sometimes they are miles apart. If that woman thought that "you get what you pay for" and the trip to New York to work illegally was expensive, she may not have expected to end up in a brothel. I feel for her.
