I'm trying to organize my bags before I depart soon.

Can you have a small luggage bag and a backpack for carry on, or will you have to pay an extra fee for two carry on items instead of one?

It should be OK, but you'll want to check your airline site to be sure.

I know Korean Air lets you take 2 pieces on, provided they're no more than 20kg each and within the size limit (unless you have a huge backpack, it should work.)

Thanks kiknkorea. My trip back has different airlines, so I just want a general airline consensus.

I have always known the general rule of thumb for carry ons when flying internationally was 1 carry-on up to 40 lbs, and then one personal item such as a laptop with case, purse, briefcase, etc. I don't think your backpack will cut it with most airlines as a second carry-on, especially if it is stuffed.

I flew Asiana Air via United from the US. There were different rules for the two airlines and I had to follow both, so be careful if there's a connecting flight! United only had measurement rules and not weight rules for my actual "carry-on bag". Asiana Air had a 22lb max and measurement requirements for the carry on. Both airlines considered a backpack to be the equivalent of a purse or laptop case.

usaully, theres loopholes you can exploit.

for example - with Lufthansa you can have 8kg of hand luggage.

However, a laptop bag with contents (ie - a laptop) doesnt count towards this, nor does a bag for 'sufficient reading material'.

So - I put anyting electrical in a plastic bag with my laptop, and took another bag with any books and music/cds/etc in. This was particularly useful as i had quite a few ESL teaching books which are pretty chunky and heavy. Whacked them in the "reading" bag and they were exempt from weight limits.

I carried an empty rucksack tied to my hand luggage.

at the check in i asked if it would be ok to put my laptop bag contents and reading into my backpack for ease of carrying, she said that was fine.

So I took two bags, one at the 8kg limit and a hevay backpack with the books etc in.

You'll be fine. I've flown on a lot of different airlines and always have a small suitcase, laptop bag with laptop and headphones, and a messenger bag filled with novels, passport and a t-shirt or two.

One carry on! One carry on people! Frak sake, it drives me up the dern wall when people try to carry on 3 or 4 bags or a friggin suitcase bigger than the seats and weighs 50 pounds.

You're not the only one taking this flight. Be considerate of others. Follow the rules like everyone else does. What's that? You don't like waiting at the carousel for 30 mins for your bag? Well neither do I or everyone else, but guess what, that's a part of flying commercial. Rent a private jet if you don't want to follow the same friggin rules everyone else does.

If I'm ever an operations manager for one of these airlines I'm going to enforce that carry on rule like a Nazi. If your carry on is more than 5 pounds and can't fit in that little sizing bin, then it doesn't get on the plane. Want to argue about it? Bam, you're on the "no fly" list like that.

This ticks me off worse than people that complain about the TSA screening procedures. Want to fly safe? I'm going to need to see what's under that parka sir. What's that? You don't look like a terrorist? Well if I were a terrorist, that'd be just the kind of person I'd try to sneak something on with. Of course the guy with a Mohammad beard and his wife in a burka is going to be suspicious, but who would ever suspect sweet little old white grandma from Iowa? You know who, me dammit.
