Usually, I don't post about frivolity (and I consider this in that vein) but I was wondering if anyone ever made a movie, tv show, documentary, etc. about the life of a foreign english teacher in Korea if not Japan, Taiwan or another locale?
I think it could be entertaining and interesting and it could explore all kinds of things. Cultural differnces, have a love story in it, etc.
It would all depend on who made it. It would look one way from the wayguk perspective or from the Korean perspective. |

There used to be a reality show in Canada , maybe 8 years ago, called Teachers (I think). |

"Outsourced" is the closest movie I've seen. It's about a guy who goes to India to supervise a call centre and help them improve their numbers. He makes a lot of the same sort of mistakes vanilla English teachers in Korea make and the movie deals with culture shock really well. Unfortunately, it's not about ESL. Good movie, though. |

The Canadian show was called "English Teachers". Quite good. Set in Taiwan. Was the first glimpse I ever had of what it would like to teach in Asia.
Slightly off topic, but if you are looking for a travel related show, try "Departures". Two Canadian guys travel the world. It's soooo good. |

Just watch the Banged Up Abroad on the fool who shipped himself a key of hash from the Phils to Korea in the '90s. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the posters here crossed paths with him at some point.

It was a movie before it was a TV series. |

No, it's a movie. It came out in 2006.

The TV show is HORRIBLE. It's probably already canceled. I watched one episode and could barely make it through. Nothing but cultural stereotypes, cardboard acting, lame jokes and you can tell it was definitely filmed in LA or some other American city. |

Not canceled, they ordered a whole season of it.
I did a search for outsourced when you mentioned the movie, for some reason the only thing imdb spit out at me were a bunch of short films. |

Just to add to this, when "Lost in Translation" came out in the video store I was working at, many of the people renting assumed it was about teaching English in Japan. The trailer / advertisement didn't go into much detail about the plot, so people just assumed it was about teaching English in Japan...
Everyone was quite disappointed when I told them it wasn't, or if they found out for themselves.
I think a movie about teaching English (in Japan, Korea, Taiwan) would do quite well... but only if the director / writer made the movie intelligent and didn't delve too far into stereotyping. If they keep it real, it might turn out to be one very good movie.
edit: Actually, I think the movie would do well if it was about the lives of English teachers, not teaching English! |

I hope that if they do make a movie about ESL teachers, they put characters in it like Jay and Silent Bob to give it some realism. |
