hi.
I am going to Cambodia for my winter vacation.
I was planning on renting a bike and ridding around. Has anyone done this?
Is it possible to get insurance for myself while I am in Cambodia? (medical)
And, and suggested routes? I want to do at least one full day in the capital and 2 full days in AW.
this leaves me about...4 full days to get to and from Siem Reap.
2 to get there, stay 2 days, 2 to get back to catch a flight next morning... |

I've taken a 250cc trail bike to every province of the country, most of them several times.
You can ride the bike to Siem Reap in about 6 hours. But it's just a long, flat paved road.
From there, you can see some other temples by bike (Ko Ker, Preah Vihear, etc.)
Banteay Chhmar in Banteay Meanchey is also probably possible in a day.
Send me a PM and I'll put you in touch with people who can help you. |

You can rent bikes in Angkor Wat. When I visited you were also required to hire a guide (and his motorbike) to tour Angkor Wat.
I drove into Angkor Wat, got a 3-day pass, then took a day-long boat ride on the Mekong to Phnom Penh.
If you want travel insurance get World Nomads online if you don't want to get it from a travel agent. |

In Siem Reap. Angkor Wat is the temple a couple kms from the city proper.
You used to be able to ride around unescorted. I guess the motodops lost business. They let me do it a few times back in the day. Then they started stopping you at the main gate unless you had a local license (which aren't hard to get).
You can still enter from one of the many other entrances that the locals use (without a pass) and drive around the place. You just can't park your bike and walk inside the temples. I used to do that when passing through. It's quite a nice area for a leisurely ride at any time of day. |

I meant you could rent bicycles in Angkor Wat, at least at one of the temples when I was there. |

Girlfriend and I are landing in Phnom Penh sometime the night of December 25th. Plan to spend the next day there, then maybe head up to Siem Reap. Maybe we'll see you there? |

probably, but I usually pretend not to notice other white people... thought that may just be in Korea. |

i got my medical insurance for $50 but i travelled for a month to three different countries. might be different/cheaper for you. http://www.mnui.com/
and if you're staying in siem reap, i'd suggest the garden village. across the street from the downtown area. has a full restaurant, computers, etc. i slept in an outside dorm for $1/night but there's plenty of rooms. huge hut-like rooms for $3/night. food is great, beer is cheap, and MANY people to meet. they're online as well.
you can rent a bike from here for $1/day. it's about 8-10km to angkor wat and other temples (which i went back and forth 3 times) so it's a good workout. but you can rent bikes from just about anywhere. watch out for the kids. they ruined my experience in cambodia. don't buy anything!!! or even say maybe for that matter. i got a nice little lecture from a 10 year old.
stayed in a guesthouse in phnom pehn along the lake. had a good time although violently ill. you can bargain them down, too. it's what i did and got cheap rooms the whole time. bargain everywhere!!! |

The lake is filled in now, so don't head there. End of an era! |
