So I'm headed to Thailand for winter vacation, staying in phi phi and patong. I was wondering about some precautionary measures and hoped someone might help me out! When I was in Cuba last, I was crazy sick for a good solid 5 days and well I just cant have that in Thailand as I have far too many other things to do. Can I get something like Immodium before going? If theres not that Pepto would be good as well. If its available in both places should I get it here or there? If anyone knows the Korean translation that would be amazing as well so that I can hunt it down! |

Yea, it's available. Get your meds in Bangkok upon arrival; no need to monkey around in Korea with it. Colodium brand of loperamide is it and easily gotten at a pharmacy by asking for it in English. A driver can and is very willing to help you get what you need and want. Colodium worked wonders for me last Summer from food poisoning. Instead of 5 days down, it was only less than 1 day to recover. Boot's is the big pharmacy brand, but there's many others and Thailand manufactures American style drugs so it's all available. I was surprised by how willing Thai and Myanmar people offer you services to help out. They get down to business when it comes to solving a problem instead of monkeying around with an, "opso melioh," like they do in Korea. No worries. They are very accommodating and nice down South. If someone down there can't speak English, they'll still do everything they can to help you which might involve calling someone who can. No worries. Just watch your food and drink bottled water. The mohinga on the streets of Yangon, Myanmar kicked my butt before enduring a 12 hour bus ride with diarrhea. Drugs at the pharmacy where Thai, but I visited a Thai pharmacy for antimalarial pills and a few odds and ins before going to Myanmar. It's totally a different world down there. No problem to get necessary services and help with anything unless they simply don't have what you ask for. |

One brand available in Korea is 'Jung Ro Hwan' (정로환). It's in pill form so it's easy to pack along while traveling.
You can get a box of 48 for 1500 won or so.
Of course you can find something similar in Thailand as well, but I like going prepared and not having to worry about finding it later.
Phi Phi's nice, I was there earlier this year and would NOT want to be on a bus with those issues!
AsiaESL, you seem to have the worst luck with things here! I've had mostly very good service here (exceptional at times.)
Yes the language barrier can be an issue, but seriously, Korea isn't that difficult. |

If you get a really bad dose, I'm not sure if there's enough Immodium in the world to stop it... unless you take it with a mixture of cornflour and porridge.
Try this for a first-hand experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJO3rpzsMz4 Warning, coarse language |
