6am or 7am waking up in the cold (December, January and February) is reason enough to work at a hagwan and not the public school.
I see the poor saps from my window half asleep charging around when it is this cold (and it will get colder). Back into bed close my eyes and say a 4pm start is awesome.

Five weeks of winter vacation, a warm classroom on the fifth floor of my school (less awesome in summer), and the fact that it's just as cold when you finish work as it is when we start! Oh...and I know I'm getting paid on pay day!

Even though it is 5 weeks that is still about 2 months of too much cold and especially at that hour.
At least when work is finished and it is cold you are on your way home to relax and not on your way in - which is not relaxing.
Paid on time and in full? Yes, that is a definite plus.

+1 (public vs Hagwon debate crap)

5 weeks Vacation - 3 weeks you spent desk warming at a school with no or few teachers alone. Freezing because they will not turn on the heat because no teachers are there (apparently you do not count). And sorry you can not go home early because you are legally obligated to wait till 4:30 or 5:00.

Do not ask my me ask my GF who this happen to.

If your are lucky to get an understanding principal awesome for you. If not (which is most) it sucks!

Yeah...there's good and bad with every gig...it depends on the public school (some refuse to use heating well after it starts getting cold) and it depends on the hagwon (there are some shifty cats out there).

If you're happy with what's in your slacks....then you don't need to have it measured Wink

Now that's good advice. Sometimes its best to just appricate a good thing over bragging about it.
If you are lucky enough to get a long vacation and heat, and half days even when everyone else is working, SHADUP.
Dont start bragging all day on facebook (which is no different from desk jockey at work) about your vacation.

Dont get measured so that the rest of us with good gigs have to have vacation rolled back and spend all our time behind a desk.

Too true! In my first year my best mate who worked at a neighbouring school complained to his co-teacher that he had to desk warm and he didn't...the result was that I had to desk warm as well! That's what friends are for!

A little cold is good for you! From what I understand winter there is no worse than what I put up with in Michigan. Though they HAVE to be better about removing snow than Detroit was Surprised

My public school wasn't that generous with the heat.....and Freakn' A, what is their obsession with opening all the windows in the dead of winter?

many years ago classrooms were heated by wood or coal stoves and no ventilation.

after having a few thousand students and teachers die, they realized that that windows need to be open to live.

now they use ondol and electric heat but they still believe that windows need to be open to live.

It's actually too hot in the teacher's office right now. My classroom also has a heater and AC.

I don't see any reason to downgrade to a hagwon.

I get this week off for finals and 4 weeks for winter vacation since it covers New Year's. I will effectively be spending most of the winter on vacation or deskwarming in the toasty English Zone with the surround sound.

I know my bf, who's also in public school, has his own office with heat in a school much nicer than mine.

It's a luck of the draw, really, and we got lucky.

I too feel I could use an hour or two this morning. 6:30 came way too soon. I never have enough time in the mornings nor at my exceedingly short lunch time, but at least I'm off before dinner time. It sucks to have to be tied down to a job that runs you on a timed treadmill, but that's how it is not having money in the family. I'd rather sleep an hour more, take an extra hour, go work out at a gym, and just do other extra curricular activities instead of working, but I need the money instead. So I'm up and adam on a very dark, cold, and snowy morning of the Winter. On the plus side, in 2 weeks, I will be finished at 12 noon instead of 4:30pm to give me the time to enjoy other activities.
