I need to get some anti-malarial drugs (preferably Doxycycline or Mefloquine (Lariam)) and am wondering if anyone knows the approximate price per pill in Korea for either of these two prescriptions. Also, are there any recommended places to get the prescription for these other than the international clinic in Itaewon? |

Where are you headed to?
In most places in SE Asia you can get them over the counter (at a respectable/reliable pharmacy for about 50-70 won each.

I am going to Africa and I'll need to start taking the pills prior to my departure. It's really easy to get malaria in the specific area I'm going to. |

I think most of the Malarial parasites are resistant to Anti-malarial drugs. I would recommend that you see about obtaining or being able to obtain insect repellant in addition to the drugs. |

I second that. They are usually very toxic, and doubly so if you drink alcohol.
Simply wearing long clothes with 25% deet is not only cheaper but offers better protection than prophylaxis meds. |

Just wanted to bump this topic...
I'll be leaving for Korea in a month, and plan on travelling to Thailand at the end of my contract--so I'll hopefully be in Thailand June 2013.
I just saw my doctor and she said that there's no point in taking malaria prophylaxis now because I'm not travelling to Thailand at this moment. She said that I can just get the pills in Korea.
I'll be in a major city, so I assume the pills are widely available?
Do you need a prescription? Also, if you don't, will someone help you at the pharmacy in regards to how to take it, possible side effects, etc?
Thanks for helping a newbie out! |

You don't need to worry about Malaria in Thailand. It's only around the border areas with Cambodia. Many people have stayed here for years in Thailand without any drugs for Malaria and have never been infected. I've never met anyone here in Thailand that caught Malaria. The only person I knew that caught Malaria got it in Africa. The drugs are toxic and unnecessary unless you are in the border areas and even then I wonder if they are worth taking. |

Hi,
Thanks for replying. The thing is I'm never sure where my travels will take me and I would rather be safe than sorry. I may travel to Cambodia as well, and in that case would definitely need to take them. |

I wouldn't say definitely. I've met plenty of Westerners living in malarial areas who just take care to not expose too much skin and wear bug repellant. Having taken them on one trip through Southeast Asia, I don't think I will again. |

Hi northway,
Good point-maybe not definitely, but I would feel more comfortable taking them. That's just my opinion.
Are they available in Korea though? |

I'm sure they are, though I've never tried to get them. |

I took some generic ones once when I went to Burma. They made me sick as a dog and I stopped taking them. Haven't taken them since.
I just used a bug spray that was 30% DEET and wore long clothes during the evening time. Never had any problems.
Unfortunately, the one anti-malaria drug that has the least amount of side effects (Malarone), is rather expensive. |
