I'm going to take 4 students Friday for some pot bing soo. Fridays I usually have to kill an hour and 20 minutes between a class of super basic rug rats and my traditional elementary/middle school set that starts at 6 pm. I noticed a lot of kids come straight from school and sit and study for a couple hours before classes start at 6. Instead of doing nothing for that hour Friday afternoon, I asked my supervisor if I could teach an informal 30 minute speaking class for whatever early bird keeners turn up. We talk about TV, weekend plans, Yu Gi Oh, video games, breaking bones, whatever.

(Yeah I actually volunteered to do extra work. Most of my nights involve three 45 minute classes. That's it. Two million won a month plus a one bedroom apartment with free cable to teach less than 20 hours a week leaves me feeling like I can lob back some value-added services to an employer who has not done anything particularly evil to me�� yet.)

Anyway, there's a Lotteria, McDonald's, and KFC across the street. All seem to serve pot bing soo. Any idea who serves up the best pot bing soo? I've had Lotteria and I've enjoyed that. I'd check out McDonald's but I generally avoid going there. Is McDonald's serving pot bing soo yet? I saw an ad in a KFC window for it and I've had it a couple times at Lotteria so I know they're dishing it out.

(Anyone else feel funny being a foreigner and walking into a McDonald's and feeling like you're a living stereotype? "Sure I could have tried the kim bap place next door but I wanna eat AMERICAN!!!!")

First of all, what is "pot bing soo"? They have it at McDonald's and KFC?

Secondly, Lotteria sucks big time. It's a poor man's McDonald's. I love McDonald's, but Lotteria is just nasty. Tiny meat paddies and gobs of "secret" sauce. Yuck.

Thirdly, I don't feel bad about eating American here at all because overall, I feel that (despite the stereotypes) Americans living abroad are much better about eating locally than most foreigner groups in the U.S. I've seen. There were tons of foreign students at my university, and there were also a wide range of ethnic food options. Most of the foreigners cooked their own national food at home, but even when they went out, it seemed like all the Koreans went to eat at the Korean restaurants, Chinese to Chinese restaurants, Middle Easterners to Middle Eastern restaurants, etc, etc. There's nothing to be embarrassed about.

If you're going for pat bing su, go anywhere EXCEPT those places. It's like saying to a friend, "I'm going to take you out for a coffee," then dropping 300 won into one of those ubiquitous coffee machines.

A lot of upscale coffee shops will serve up some very good p.b.s., and there are other shops around that specialize in making giant bowls of it, enough for 5 or 6 people.

Yea, as the previous poster mentioned, you should scout around for some sort of other shop that's serving it. You can get a mountain of the icy stuff (for a bit more money, of course) at a dessert shop.

If it keeps the kids happy though then sounds like a good idea.

i would think that ice berry or best berry would be the best, but if those places are not near you...
the patbingsu at burger king looked good...
