So I'll be leaving Korea end of Feb which will have been 6 months. I understand then that I don't have to pay back airfare. So does that mean the school pays for my ticket back home or no? And if so, do I book the flight and have it reimbursed or does the school book my ticket??

Thanks

As far as I know, you would have to complete the contract to get airfare but that is a 12 month one. Tompatz may know better thanI.

As long as it`s stated clearly in your contract ,then you wont have to pay for your initial airfare that brought you here.

But for quitting early and going back after 6 months? You will have to find your own money for the way back...you did half a job. Very Happy

Biting my tongue not to say something sarcastic. You book & pay. Have a nice trip.

day 0 -> 6 months: you have to reimburse them for for flight to korea, and pay your own way on the flight from korea

6mo -> 1yr: you're no longer required to pay them back, but you'll have to foot the bill for your flight home

after 1yr: they've paid for your flight to korea and, after having fulfilled your contract, will pay for your flight home.

Although the above is standard, your contract may be different. Airfare is contractual, there is no legal requirement to provide airfare.

nono I think on this one i was kind of asking for it. Why should they pay for my flight back if I'm breaking the contract 6 months early. That wouldn't make any sense or be fair. I was just asking to be sure.

Thanks guys

no, your school doesn't owe you airfare unless you complete your 12 months.

Just curious but do you think anyone leaving early ever pays their airfare back? Wouldn't they just pull a runner?

The problem with leaving early is not just that you have to pay back airfare, but you also usually get cheated for your entire last salary and get treated like dirt for your remaining time (if you aren't just fired on the spot and evicted from your apartment). THAT is why people run.

Airfare is strictly a contractual matter.
There is NOTHING in labor or immigration law in that regard (unless you need to be deported).

IF your contract says you don't repay it after 6 months then you don't.
MANY hagwan contracts no longer have the 6 month clause in them so you can get burned for the airfare to Korea and still have to pay your own way out.

What does your contract say?
