Are you American? If so, it seems fairly easy. I've looked into this as well for family reasons.
You can google it and it will turn up the site from the government that tells you what to do. It's mainly just paperwork and then you have to put an ad in your local newspaper back home declaring you have changed your name. Then they reissue your birth certificate, social security card, draft card, voter ID, and passport with all that. I guess I should point out you can't do it while on a visa here. You'll have to go home and get it all done and get a new passport and visa. Once it's all official, then you'll have ot contact your high school and your university and get them to reissue your diploma and degrees with your new name and make sure they change it in their records in case you need transcripts. Then go down the line notifying all the people you wish to know that youve changed your name. Especially those that are your references. If you were in the military, I don't know if you should let them know yourself or if they will get that information automatically.
Needless to say, it's not that complicated, just tedious and will take a while. You might want to give it 6 or 8 months back home to go from start to finish. |
