If you accept a job and can't stand the apartment, can you opt for a housing stipend instead or get them to move you. Is this scenario typically addressed in contracts? |

You may be able to convince your boss to give you a housing allowance instead. However, if h or she agrees, he or she will probably want you to pay the fees for canceling the contract early. Also, if your apartment is pretty crummy, that probably means it's very cheap. Your boss doesn't want to spend much money, so if you do get that housing allowance, it won't be much. My apartment last year was 15 sq meters. Tiny, especially for Ilsan. I wasn't able to get it changed, despite trying. |

I had this situation and they said that it was "against the rules" for me to move (rules that they made up and thus could easily be broken). I was even willing to cover the fees to break the contract (my place was really that bad, and thirty minutes from work), but I was still shut down, even though I wanted to move into a place that cost the same amount as my old place. |

Check your contract. Often (and particularly in the case of PS positions) there is a clause that says you can choose the apartment OR the housing allowance but after you have made the choice you are stuck with it for the duration of the contract.
If that is NOT the case, then it is negotiable but changing won't be cheap, easy or convenient and Often the hagwan WON'T pay the deposit for your new apartment if they are paying your housing allowance.

I have no idea what rent is or would be for a comparable place. Would the typical 300k - 400k won allowance suffice? |

In the foreigner ghetto around Itaewon 400,000 is probably enough, elsewhere I get the impression that the minimum you're paying is 500,000 a month, though I could be wrong. The bigger issue is key money, as you need 5 million won at a minimum, more often 10 million. |
