|
|
Like so many I'm working on getting all my documents together. I'm confused though about the apostille on the federal criminal background check. From looking around on these boards and elsewhere it looks like there are two routes:
1) Getting the certification (signature and seal) and then mailing it to DC:
http://www.state.gov/m/a/auth/
2) Getting the certification (signature and seal), writing a cover letter in which I attest that the CBC is authentic and legit, getting that cover letter notarized by a notary public, and then getting the notarization apostilled.
Most posts on here seem to recommend #1, but I've seen reference to #2 as well. I'm wondering which to do. 1 will take the 15 days to process, and 2 will be a couple of errands in an afternoon. Hoping to leave the States very soon, advice? |

Both.
Make a copy of the CBC.
With the original, do number one.
With the copy, do number two. |

Since notarizing/apostilling a copy is the least risky (don't have to attach anything to the original), I actually just did it yesterday. Problem is - when the CBC is scanned or copied, an ugly "unauthorized copy" watermark shows up all over the document. I have that apostilled copy - but I doubt it will be accepted anywhere ... |

Good piece of advice. When in doubt go overboard. Better to have done ALL that you could have done and fail, then to have done one and then failed wondering if you could have done something different. Even if both will work, you always have an extra. You will be amazed just having something extra can save you ass. |

Just a question: has anyone had option #2 work in Korea (apostille affidavit of authenticity)? It seems as though one could do this in a matter of days (if you live by a Secretary of State's office), whereas option #1 could take upwards of a month. |

In other threads posters have said option #2 was accepted. My only concern is that it does not really meet the requirements of the regulations but is accepted due to a lack of understanding by K-immigration of what they are getting. My worry is K-immigration may make an adjustment to this.
My personal recommendation would be if you have the time, don't short-cut if you don't have to. Get the apostille done by the letter of the law through the US State Department. However, if you are under a serious time crunch and it is the difference between getting the job you want or not, you can go the second route and likely be okay. |

Thanks for the advice everyone - the photo idea is brilliant, just tried it and it works. I think I'm going to go with option #2 with a printed photo of the CBC, and then send the original off for the "official" option #1, hopefully it will come back in time.
If anybody has experience with option #2 working / not working please share, would be good to hear how everyone's experience went. |
