On the forms we have to fill out it says we requiere two witnesses to get married. However, on the UK embassy website it says that they are not sometimes needed.

To anyone who has gotten married at the city hall in Seoul, did you need witnesses?

My girlfriend and I are both UK nationals. Don't know if that makes a difference.

I used to be a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in NZ. When I married couples they had to have 2 witnesses. I can't imagine how a marriage can be authenticated if you don't have at least one witness. (There could be trouble down the road if you can't prove you were legally married.)

Just grab a friend/s, or some people from the registrars office.

Good luck to you both.

Thanks.

I didn't understand it either.

The website just says "A personal appearance by witnesses may not be necessary, e.g. if the forms have been correctly completed and witnessed prior to submission".

Our biggest problem is that we live in Gwangju. We are going up to Seoul and getting married there. Since we are getting married on a Friday, our friends will be at work. And, we don't know anyone in Seoul. We're in a bit of a pickle to be honest.

If you don't have anyone to go with you and your intended, don't sweat it. Two of the civil servants there will be pressed into service on your behalf.

That eases my mind. Thanks to both of you.

Are you marrying a Korean? We just brought their official stamps to the office when doing the paperwork.

My husband and I got married in Korea, and neither of us is Korean. You can get your witnesses (two friends of any nationality are fine) to sign the forms ahead of time, and that is adequate. They don't need to go with you, which makes it seem pointless...but it also makes it very easy.

I am writing an article for the Korea Herald about the challenges and cultural differences that arise in marriages between Koreans and expats.

Could anyone married here PM me if interested in talking to me? Experiences can be good, bad or indifferent. It's just to get an indication of what mishaps, misunderstandings or simple differences crop up. Thanks!
