If I got a job offer from a hagwon like Polykorea - would it be acceptable to ask for a higher salary than what is offered? I would do this primarily if I felt the hours were not reasonable with the given salary.

thanks

Do you mean Poly School, the hagwon chain? While I have never interviewed with them nor have I ever worked for them, from my friends who do work there and from what I have read here it appears that they generally won't negotiate salary. From what I have read/heard, it is pretty high anyway--but you will put in a lot of work for that money.

In general, sure you can try to negotiate salary. However, do consider the fact that there are many others who will probably take whatever job for whatever money--and the hagwons know this. Do you have any specific qualifications that make you stand out above the thousands of others who are willing to teach here?

You can ask but in a market that is flooded with economic refugees from the states (and more applying in Jan. when the seasonal employment ends)

and

it being so easy to replace you with another applicant the chances of you getting it, unless you are a licensed and certified teacher (in your home country), are not very good.

Thank you for the replies,

After doing some reading, I think this school gives a 150 hours of teaching time per month for the morning schedule.

Considering that the typical job offers 2.1 for 120 hours,

150 hours should logically pay = 2.9 per month (2.1X1.3Cool.

Thus, if it is indeed 150 teaching hours/month I will settle for perhaps 2.8 at the minimum if there is full severance and pension.

Thanks,

First of all, your math is off--150 is 125% of 120, not 138%. That would put your salary supposedly at 2.625, assuming you are comparing to 2.1.

From my understanding, that is in the neighborhood of what you are likely to be offered; however, unless they have changed their practices REALLY recently, the way they keep the books will mean that your pension payments and severance bonus will only be paid on a salary of 1.6 million.

Also consider that beyond teaching that many classes, there is a significant amount of administrative work associated with each of them--significantly more than you will find at some other hagwons. The number of teaching hours does not tell the whole story.

Lets say they do offer 2.6. option 1
And my other offer is 2.1 with full pension option 2

Considering pension is calculated on 1.6 for offer 1, that difference equals (2.1-1.6)*.045*12 = -270,000 won.

So you would receive 270k won less with option 1 (pension).
And also 500k less (severance)

Total: -750k

So the question is: is it worth it to work extra 30 hours/month and extra administrative duties for +5,250,000 won per year? ((2.6-2.1)*12- 0.75)
