Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows where I can buy some lamb and maybe even some grass-fed beef in Seoul.

Thanks.

I've seen lamb at the foreign food supermarket in Itaewon. Also a lamb restaurant in Nonhyeon, I think.

Does it need to be specifically grassfed? Cos otherwise I think you're screwed. I lived in a town 'famous' for its beef yet the only time I saw cows were the sad looking shadows in tiny outdoor stalls that the bus went past. I'd personally go for overseas stuff if you can - and that can be found in some restaurants. Others who are more in the know can direct you to these.

You are kidding right?? You want grass fed beef in a country that has very little grass and no room for western style farms. From what I can see, most of the cows are fed the straw that is left over from the rice harvest.
Those white circular bundles you see stacked up at Korean 'ranch' hold that feed.

As to any alternative feed I would not know except that there are no grasslands here to let cattle graze, even in the most rural areas.

Isn't that Hoju Australian beef grass fed? They still raise beef using land and cowboys instead of machines, small concrete spaces, and artificial junk food. The quality is far tastier and leaner. I too prefer grass fed. It's makes all the difference with the quality.

All australian and NZ beef is grass fed. The NZ stuff is even antibiotic free (probably the australian stuff as well). The australian stuf is known as hoju so gogi or hoju beefeu, while the NZ stuff is new jelandeu so gogi/beefeu.

Go to emart, homeplus or a butchers.

Lamb can't help you with

all korean animals are raised in metal sheds as far as I know. Ive been all over the country and never once seen a cow in a field nor a sheep.

I dont think organic is big to koreans considering they keep dogs in cages in all weathers without letting them go for walks.

And regarding the post title, i didnt know you could feed a cow lamb?

There's nothing so wrong about raising cows in metal sheds. A few cows with a metal shed that has room to move around and in which their manure isn't allowed to pile up are better off than any conventionally raised cow in the US.

Read Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. It gets much worse than a metal shed.

Is it? I thought it came about from cattle being fed cattle?

Well, I think thats a matter of opinion (free range vs x and all that). That argument aside, there wasnt much grass in the shed last time I checked (re:OP).

Anyway, we should all listen to Troy Mclure and take a trip to Bovine University. The answers will be there.

I did not know that.

So I did some reading around the subject just now this and this is what Ive found (its not that I dont believe you, but I always like to check my sources for next time Im arguing!).

CJD came from cattle being fed, sheep, cattle and pig offal.

The most popular theory is that the scabies came from sheep. Though there is no conclusive evidence for this that I could find. There are also other theories that it may have originated in humans. I found a very interesting article on the subject if your interested.

I was at Costco just last week, and they have a sign over the meat section that says "grain fed Australian beef." I've never seen grass fed beef here, and it is something I'd notice because I want to buy it too.

My bad. I shouldn't have made such a generalized statement without doing some research.

Okay all NZ beef is grass fed. I have come across NZ beef at random butcheries.

Yes, all the beef I see at Costco is Australian grain-feed and there is no lamb there. They do have organic chicken though. But, of course, you can get organic chicken at EMart and LotteMart and probably many, many other places. That's a step in the right direction.
