Me and a couple of friends are heading to Daegu for the weekend. I did some searching here and will probably hit Jung-gu and/or Susung-gu.

Any places that anyone can recommend? ex. clubs, bars, other hotspots?

Thanks!

Forget about Suseong-gu, there's nothing of note there. Your best options are Jung-gu, as you mentioned, and Buk-gu.
As far as specific bars, it depends on what you're looking for. Do you want to be completely surrounded by foreigners, or are you looking for a balance? DJ or live music? Bar or club?

Cool thanks. Actually, we're not looking to go to a foreigner-heavy club (like places in Itaewon), just where all the locals go. We definitely prefer DJs over live music.

My friend mentioned 동성로 in Jung-gu. Is that place alright?

Thanks again.

I honestly don't know what that place is. I usually don't go downtown (Jung-gu) anymore, but if I did I'd probably start at Commune's, then maybe Who's Bob or Urban. They're all within a couple blocks of each other.

I prefer to stick to the Kyungpook University Area in Buk-gu. The best is Sugar Joe's. They do have live music on weekends, but it's usually more coffee shop type acts than loud bands, and the crowd is often about 50% waygook. There's several other smaller places in this area, and it's only about a 4,000 Won cab ride from downtown if you wanted to try both.

Sweet. Thanks for the advice!

Commune was a dump but maybe it's improved since 2004?

동성로 is Dongseongro, one of the big roads through downtown. There's actually not any clubs right on that road, it's mostly restaurants and shops.

Take a taxi to "Samdeok Seobangseo" (Samdeok Fire Station) which is right on the edge of downtown. That area is where most of the nightlife can be found.

A few people mentioned Commune's, but it's a foreigner bar and you said you weren't really looking for that. I usually just go to the hookah bars, so unfortunately I can't really tell you where to find DJs.

For DJs and things like that try Kusk (near Thursday Party), Club Heavy, Frog, GoGo Vinyl, and that one near the restaurant that looks like a bus downtown. I forget what it's called. G2 or something.

For jazz try Club That.

For live bands try Communes, Urban, Sugar Joes.

For a bar that will play any music you ask them to go to Organ (which is on a street with tons of clubs).

All of those are in Jung-gu except Sugar Joes, which is near the university.

If you want bars with lots of Korean college students and less foreigners, wander around the university area. There are tons of hole-in-the-wall places that the Koreans love. There is one called Umber right on the main road across the street and to the right of the North Gate of Kyungpook (cross the street away from the gate, turn right). It is quite literally a hole-in-the-wall. You'll need to crouch to stand up.

Enjoy!

I agree with everything here, and only mentioned Commune's as a place to start b/c the cocktails are cheaper and it would be a good place to get info/directions about other places in the area from some of the expat community there. It's the easiest bar to find downtown.
But I definitely vouch for the KNU area, i.e. Sugar Joe's, Umber, 72nd St, etc.
