I would recommend withdrawing your cash ahead of time and exchanging at the airport. The exchange centers are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and tend to have the best rates.

Last time I went on vacation I went to KEB to exchange, but if I had waited until I got to the airport I would have gotten a much better rate. Also, don't wait until you get to your destination country as the won is not valued as high.

Have a fun and safe trip.

Last time I was there I was told I could exchange up to 12 million won. (American currency).

So unless policy has changed recently you should be fine.

I've changed up to $8000 at the airport. However, my favorite place to exchange cash is in Hong Kong because they don't ask to see any ID. That's how all cash transaction should be in any free trading economy.

Where's home? 1.8 million should not be a problem anywhere. They don't ask for ID in Australia, and that amount would, of course, be no problem. Back home, however, the local bank will give you a better exchange rate than the outlets at the airport. Best advice, divide it up and change it in 2 different places. Once in Korea (lessen the bulk of this silly currency) and once when you land. Exchange the bulk wherever has the lowest fees/best exchange rate. Hong Kong, for example, charges no fees, but they give shocking exchange rates. Do the math, change your money, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Or something.

Don't exchange at your home bank unless you live in a large city. I did this last year and they had to send the money off to a main branch to be verified before they could give me dollars. They had never seen Won before. It took about a week.
