|
|
So I'm approaching the end of my first year in Korea, and my contract happens to end on a Tuesday, which is also the day that my Work Visa expires, technically. However, I will most likely be expected to work ON that Tuesday (and I'd be willing to finish the week to help the school) and so it's unrealistic for me to expect to be able to leave before my work visa expires. What typically happens at the end of a one-year contract like this? Is it understood that I have a day or two grace period after my work visa, or will I have to go through the process of renewing it just so I can leave like three days later? |

If you can show immigration a plane ticket out of Korea, you can extend for up to 28 days. You can do this online, see the immigration website. They'll just extend the visa until the date of the flight. DO NOT just leave after the date on your ARC, as you will be fined, and may have trouble getting another work visa. |

Your visa is irrelevant.
When does your ARC expire? this is the one that matters.
You are required (by law) to do either:
a) LEAVE Korea before midnight on the last date indicated by your ARC or
b) Get an extension.
Failure to do a) or b) WILL result in any or all of:
1) black-mark in your immigration file (complicating a return to Korea in the future)
2) delay and questioning at the airport when you do try to leave
3) possibly a fine (100k per month (or part thereof) is the usual)
It is simple to get an extension (up to 30 days).
All you need is your ARC, passport, exit ticket and a quick trip to immigration (or you can do it on-line via the immigration website if you have access to a FAX or scanner).

if you extend your visa this way, you CAN'T work for any time during the extension. your last day of work is still the date on your ARC, but you can remain in korea for however long the extension is. |
