|
|
So in my excitement about finally getting my vacation dates, I forgot all about my excitement about the Ducks playing in the upcoming BCS National Championship game, and I booked a trip to Koh Lanta for that time period. I'll be staying in a basic fan bungalow and the resort does not have WiFi.
Are there any bars or restaurants on Koh Lanta with good enough internet to watch live video? I'll have a laptop with me, so wireless is fine.
GO DUCKS! |

If you're a cheap-ass in Thailand, God only knows what you're like here. Good luck finding a signal that won't have a password. |

Internet cafes are everywhere in Thailand. Maybe you'll get a lower rate if you go to one and rent the wifi signal instead of a workstation. |

Hey, I didn't say I was only looking for free WiFi. I'm willing to shell out some cash.
I just didn't think about internet availability when I booked that basic bungalow, that's all. |

Lots of internet cafes.
Bandwidth IS an issue. MANY cafes will have 2-10 PCs hooked up to a single 4mb DSL line (might not be up to streaming live video feeds).

People forget just how spoiled they are broadband-wise in Korea. |

Sorry to rain on your party. Forget watching live video feed or even watching a Youtube video in an underdeveloped country on an island. Seemed the internet was too slow in Bangkok cafes as I noticed pages loaded much slower than I'm used to. In Myanmar, it was unusable at a paltry 4kb per second with everything timing out. You'll have to wait until after vacation to watch a video unless it's a DVD. I'm leaving my computer home to go to Koh Jum while island hopping, an island with traditional thatch roof bungalows, no electricity, and lit only by oil lamps. I stumbled on this by accident when running Google searches about island hopping on long tail boats. I hope to meet other people to hang out with. Seems the island vacation is best for having a good time with your friends or sig other. I left my computer home last August too. If you've got people of all sorts around you that will talk, do business, and help you along the way as well as books, you don't need a computer for anything.

If you REALLY want to get away from it all, yes, do not bring a notebook. |

We were so fortunate to be stranded in Koh Lanta during the uprising a few years ago. We took cooking lessons, went to Mui thai (sp) boxing every night, got our diving certs and did a bunch of diving, and hung out on the beach.
If anything is going to be on TV or cable it will be Thai or Swedish in nature. |

Don't they have Star Movies and international channels standard for Southeast Asia? |

Not where my house is. Not an option with any of the cable networks and possible only with 1 of the local "satellite" companies and they charge a fortune and require a minimum of a 2 year contract.

I'm wrapping up a trip to Ko Lanta, and I'll say the Web connection is fine. It can be sporadic at times but I have few complaints. |
