Hello,
I will be taking a vacation next year and I was wondering if I could get some opinions about the best places to dive in SE Asia? I'll be taking the Wreck diving course, so any places that have shipwrecks, submerged airplanes, etc. would definitely be appealing. Also a big fan of sharks, stingrays, etc. I've been thinking about the PI, but I would like to know of any other places that might be appealing that I haven't thought of. I went to Bali last year, so that is one locale that I do not need information on. Thanks. |

Best wreck diving = Truk and Palau (but they are NOT cheap).
Decent and cheap = Phils (more places than you can count) and Thailand (again, more places than you can count).
Up and coming places are all over Indonesia.
Just scan back though this forum (2 or 3 pages back should give you more options than any 1 man can afford in a lifetime.

| Caveat that I've never dived, but I've heard nothing but good things about diving in the Gilis (in Indonesia off of Lombok, a couple hours by fast boat from Bali), and they're an awesome place to visit in their own right. |

| Palau Palau Palau. Did I mention Palau???? I've dived all over the Caribbean (DR, Cayman, Mexico, Bahamas), Australia (GB Reef, Yongola, etc...) NZ, Guam, Thailand, and Bali. I thought no where could ever beat Australia, but wow. Palau is just amazing. |

| i haven't gone there yet, but i've heard semporna, borneo is supposed to have some world class diving. that's my next stop! but beware, if you want to dive sipadan island you'll need to apply for a dive permit beforehand. |

| Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I'm sure that Palau would be awesome, but probably not within my budget. I've been doing some research and I'm liking Subic Bay in the PI. There are a lot of wrecks there and that is primarily why I would be interested. It is also close to Angeles for nightlife, so I would have the best of both worlds. Anyone out there with experience in Subic? Thanks again to everyone. |

Lots of stuff if you go back a couple pages.
Dive in the afternoon, hedonism in the evening, next morning to recover from the previous evening, rinse and repeat.

Yeah, I'm liking me some of the PI at this point. I guess that there are flights directly from Incheon to Angeles, right? I'd rather have a direct flight there. If there are direct flights(which I assume), it must be Korean or Asiana that does it, right? Anyone flown there recently? Thanks again for all the replies.  |

Asiana flies to Clark.
I am not sure if there are any others who fly direct from ICN to CRK.

I just got my open water on Cabilao Island in the Philippines. The experience was amazing. There used to be thousands of sharks in the area and you can still see some hammerheads but its becoming rarer and rarer.
If you head up that way go and see Bobet Cruz at the Cabilao Dive Center, the man is amazing he was the first to discover the pygmy seahorse in the Philippines, if your going to see sharks or other interesting sites this will be the guy to find them for you. |

| Great visibility and tons to see at both Ishigaki/Iriomote/Taketomi and Yonaguni islands in Japan. |

In my personal research, Puerto Galera in Philippines is one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest.
I think there are some sunken ships there but some other places have more. WW2 had some battles in Philippines. |

Google "Busuanga Island" at the top of Palawan. Nearby El Nido also has some decent dive sites, but no wrecks.

ps, I would skip Borneo. An American diver was abducted & beheaded by Muslim extremists a few years back in that area.

In Palau there is the remains of a Japanese fleet that was sunk including but not limited to destroyers, cruisers, support ships and planes.
There is (or was last time I was there) the remains of a lot of stuff on the surface (land) as well. If you are wreck diver or WWII buff there aren't many better places to see relics.
There are some wrecks of the south end of Leyte in the Philippines but most of the stuff that was sunk there during WWII is far too deep for diving (of any kind).
Truk is another place that is hard to get to but if you have the time and money the diving is beyond belief.
